Caught several of these in the surf last week near PINS. they look like baby jack crevalle to me, but I'm not 100% on that.

Looks like baby Jack's to me.

Crevalle Jack (Caranx hippos)

Atlantic Jack Crevalle

Black-tailed trevally, a.k.a. Jack Crevalle. Caranx hippos as has already been mentioned. People fly across half the globe and spend considerable fortunes to attempt to get its close cousin, Caranx ignobilis, the Giant Trevally. Same genus as our local fish.

For me, Caranx hippos is more fish than I care to get. One 15-20 pound fish is a real chore to get in, running off 100-150 yards of line in one blistering run and then a slow, slow line recovery. No way would I fly to the South Pacific or Indian Ocean for something even worse. Different strokes for different folks.

Caught tons of these at Port A on Sabiki rigs. Used for live bait and caught several Rays

Jack crevalle never seem to be the right size, at least any I’ve come across. Either too big really for light tackle or too small to be much fun.

Jack Crevalle are one of my favorite fish. They are found in the bay, in the surf, near offshore, and offshore. They will hit a topwater lure, fly, gold spoon, live bait or almost anything else when they are feeding. There isn't a much better fighting saltwater fish in Texas for their size. The meat is really red and they make excellent bait. Food value is poor at best, but that may be why there are so many still out there.

One of the most under-rated fish on the coast and an awesome fighter.

I got in to 20+ lb jacks years ago. One of the most memorable days of fishing I've ever experienced. Was set up to fish for tarpon off bridge embankment on Channel 2 Bridge a few miles down from Islamorada. Was waiting for mullet to come through to cast net for tarpon bait when I see schools of mullet a hundred yards out showering and then racing straight towards me. I'm standing on concrete embankment when the school of mullet hits the wall so hard it shook. Some have completely cleared the wall as it was near high tide, jumped into the side of my 5 gallon bucket filled with water and knocked it over, they have turned over my chair that was next to it, and are flopping all over the bank. Huge jacks were thrashing those mullet against the wall. It was an unbelievable sight. I quickly hooked one of the 10 inch mullet and dropped it straight down and immediately was hooked up. It was a constant fight with these jacks for over an hour. I had my girlfriend with me at the time and we were both worn out. Each battle would last 10 minutes with the tackle we were using. Lots of tourists stopped by to watch as there was no one else fishing that area and they were entertained as we let them reel them in for a while as we were so beat. Will never forget the look on the face of the 70 year old German lady that gave it a go. What an experience for everyone there that day. Later on after the jacks cleared the area I hooked a 100+ tarpon that would have spooled me if it hadn't broke me off.


I still stop by that bridge to look around every time I'm down that way.

The most scary thing to a mullet must be a marauding school of crevalle jacks. I was fishing in Port Mansfield, Texas next to another boat and mullet started jumping in both of our boats as a big school of jacks came through the jetty cut. We filled our live well then started catching the jacks. I was a great day on the water.
