I will be in Jamaica in March and would like to do some fishing. Has anyone fished down there, who did you use and what all did you catch? Is it not worth it or was it a trip that you would do again? I will be going with my wife, who is an excellent fisherman, we have never been deep sea but wouldn't mind trying.

I have gone to Jamaica 6 times in the last 10 years... it is our choice for vacationing hands down. We are going again next year. Wherever you stay, there will likely be what I refer to as a 'local' or 'small time' guide... Someone who lives in the area, has a smaller boat, and will take you out for 50 bucks. I would not suggest these, as that is a hustle for them, and it could be hit or miss. Most of the ones I used took me out to areas where the fish were smaller, and they had no electronics, and the gear was subpar.. then again, you get what you pay for...and I did catch fish.

Now, if you know what you want to catch, bigger fish, a specific big fish, do your research and schedule with a commercial guide ahead of time. Find one local to where you are staying, and look at reviews. You will pay a little more, but the fishing will be way more memorable. Another advantage you will get with the bigger operation, is they will bring you further out that are not pressured as much as a local guide who is bringing you to where the many local fisherman go as well.

Thank you for your input, we are looking for a off-shore trip and just trying to figure out who we might use.

Was fishing offshore in Jamaica (north coast around Ocho Rios) and hooked up on a nice tuna. Was reeling it in and we had some fairly serious steel leader which was no match for the 12-14 foot shark that took our tuna. Got it on video and man, that thing was huge.

We go every year to Negril, Jamaica, but we go in the summer as the wife is a school teacher. Jamaica is not really known for great fishing because the locals literally over harvest everything for food, so I would say your best bet would be to charter a trip off shore. I checked into it a few years back and it was $600 per person. I couldn't get a group of 4 or more to get it cheaper, so I passed. The diving and snorkeling there is pretty good, so take your own mask, as you can see lots of neat stuff along the beach resorts just out past the buoys, tons of star fish, sting rays, lion fish and small trigger fish. I found a few $100 Jamaican dollar bills there once snorkeling and thought I had scored, turns out it was like $2.75 US dollars at the time
