Anyone taken their Yamaha motor, or any motor for that matter, into a service center and been told that it has a bent prop shaft, when you know that it isn't? Recently took mine in and and experienced this. Service manager said that he could see it with his eyes, and didn't need to put a dial indicator on it. Boat has very few hours on it, I've never hit anything, prop is almost perfect, and I certainly couldn't see or feel anything. Took it to another shop, said I was concerned with it maybe being bent. They put a dial indicator on it and found it to be way under tolerance, and basically as good as new. Curious if I just found the only unscrupulous center, or if this is a popular "unneeded upsale".

Let the Service Manager who tried to screw you know about it. Suggest he get his eyes re-calibrated and you plan to spread the word about what happened.

Common practice at lots of outboard shops, not all but a lot are looking for a way to soak the customer. You did right by getting a second opinion but the shop who gave the bogus information needs to be outed right here on this forum. This will let a lot of people know who and which shops to avoid.

I have seen where the props barrel was off. It could easily be diagnosed as a bent prop shaft with a quick glance, buts its actually the prop that's off.

Bent like he said prop you always have to put a dial indicator on it to see I do that when we even are doing water pump and Lube change .We pull prop and check for fishing line and check shaft if any think shaft may be bent and if it is we call customer we also pressurize gear case to make sure no leaks.

Thanks for the input. Doesn't sound like something that is done a lot, but maybe I just look like a sucker and caught them on a slow week and they were pulling out the old trick to hit their number. As once a small business owner, I know that your reputation is the most important thing to the success or failure of your company, and one sorry employee can absolutely train wreck years of hard work. I am going to meet with the owner this week to discuss what transpired and give him a chance to properly address it with his service manager. After meeting with him I will then post who it is, and hopefully a positive note on what they have done to insure that it doesn't happen again.

Very unfortunate, but an ever growing practice. I have stories that would make a man cringe.
