The last couple of days on Eagle Mountain have been fruitful, and the quality is right where it needs to be. To start my mornings off, I've been finding surfacing fish by the Fort Worth Yacht Club, as well as on the edges of the flats south of the island. This past Wednesday was a real firework show, as the dark skies and cool breeze had the fish fired off for hours. After roughly 8:00am on most mornings, the fish are going to their deeper haunts and we're finding them in 12-16ft on the windblown edges of humps. I've been having better success south of the island before 9:00am, then I'll run up to the very shallow hump that's about a mile north of the island once the sun gets good and high.

Regardless of the time and techniques, I'm fishing with downsized, natural colored slabs to "match the hatch". Our best bait lately has been the 1/2 ounce Slab Buddies from www.constantpursuitoutfitters. Another good bait of choice is the smallest chrome colored Cotton Cordell slab you can find. When the fish are on surface, I’m having my customers cast and reel at a medium speed. When we’re vertically jigging, I’m having them bounce the bait off the bottom, in a VERY slow up and down motion. Most fish are being caught on the downswing, so a hi-vis line really helps. I've had to bust out the trolling rigs on a couple of trips, but for the most part, we are still getting plenty with the slabs. I will say though, the trolling offers a nice breeze on those dead days.

The sandbass fishing should stay steady for awhile, then it's time for crappie come October. Good luck out there TFF! www.ftworthfishing.com
