Anybody know what is happening with Monticello?

Received a text forwarded from the Titus County Sherriff's Office that the Monticello County Park gate will be locked with no admittance until further notice as of today...

This is NOT good. I just spoke to the Sheriff's office and they said the County Park is closed for good.

Not surprised. I thought it was just a matter of time. Without the winter traffic when the lake had warm water I can’t imagine that park would be anything but a cash drain on the county. Sad. Now you can actually say: “RIP Monty”!!

There's been a lot more traffic out there than you would think. And the park was being run by a private guy not the county and they were doing a horrible job. I go out there 40+ days a year and half of those days there wouldn't be any pay envelopes in the box to pay. Hard to cover your cost, much less make money when they only way you can get paid is for people to put money in the envelopes and there aren't any available.

I am trying to pull something together on this by working with Luminant. So will ask this question on this thread and see what responses we get.

Assuming the park was cleaned up and maintained, the ramp kept in good condition and a locking dock was rebuilt, would you pay $50 for an ANNUAL pass? Day passes could also be purchased on a new website.

Again this is all theoretical until I find out what Luminant is willing to do if anything.

Still had bass. What a shame. How much money does it really take to keep that park open? It just sat there. Maybe have to dump trash and clean restrooms. They rarely came to pick up the money. 1/2 the time the box was full. I had my best day ever on that lake before they opened the gates. 4 over 6lbs on a frog. Some super big sand bass last time I was out there so I'm sure that would have hurt the bass population anyway. Still would like to keep that option open.

Agree on how easy this would be but I am guessing the guy who took over the park mgmt thought it would be a big money maker which is can't be. The weird thing it they just fixed the roads last weekend.

And on the sand bass, while I hate them being in there, they've never been proven to hurt a Largemouth population in a lake according to the TPWD and given how much grass is in the lake, the large mouth will do just fine.
