After spending most of my time out of town since early July fixing up my stepson's house and property, I hope to be fishing at least once or twice a week again. (Stepson died of apparent heart attack on June 22.) I got back home yesterday and went out to test fishing. The neighbor had told me that Saturday he and Fastguy didn't have any luck. So, I'm thinking it's that time of the year (Aug -Sep) when we get a new hatch of threadfin shad and you have to go to smaller baits. For me that means a number 2 Mepps. Anxious to get out, I went out from 3 to 4:35 PM after donning a wide-brimmed hat and sunscreen. I did find and catch fish at Long Ridge in 24 fow, Key Ranch Drop-off in 16 fow and at Iron Wall Hump in 21 fow. Indeed the #2 worked the best, but I caught a few on #4 on Long Ridge after I had located and caught some using a #2. The bite was very good catching most of the fish on the 1st drag off the bottom. Ended up with 25 whites (my target before getting out of the heat), 2 short hybrids, 3 cats and a 21 inch hybrid..

Great to hear from you again Dennis. I figured something had happened by the lack of posting from you. Thank you for the report. Sorry for the loss of your stepson.

Went on a scouting run yesterday leaving dock at 8:10 AM. Headed west toward Drew's Humps when I saw surfacing fish all around me out in the middle of Crappie Island flats. Caught about 20 fish there including a keeper hybrid and some good white bass. Did best by letting #4 Mepps go to bottom before retrieving. After that stopped I checked A-Frame, Sam's Hump, Long Ridge West, Key Ranch Drop-off, Key Ranch North, 3-Jug Hump and Meimac Point and found no concentrations of fish. Went to Iron Wall Hump and it was loaded on the south end. Caught 10 and moved on. Nothing at Slide Hump, but found tons of fish on the SE limb of Spillway Hump - from 16 fow out to 24 fow. Caught about 10 there including a 22 inch hybrid then went to Enchanted Isle Ridge. Found several concentrations there along the southern drop-off in 18 to 23 fow. Caught 10 more and went to check out Game Warden Hump. Found enough there to stop and caught about 10 more in 16 fow before heading home at 12:50 PM with total of 82 fish caught. I caught fish on #2 and #4 Mepps.

Hey there. I’m
Enjoying reading the posts on here. I am new to this forum and just moved to CCL. I’m trying to learn all
I can. I have a map of CCL fishing spots that a friend gave me. When you refer to #2 Mepps... I looked at their website and don’t which one you are referring to. Can you help
me out with more specific info?
Thanks!

Hey Dennis!
I'd read your technique a couple of years ago and couldn't put it together. Growing up with Mepps bucktails (actually squirrel) being the weapon of choice for pre-spawn Northern Pike (36" plus range) didn't help. Your video really helped describe what you're doing. So, yesterday I gave it a try over here on Grapevine. The sandbass really went crazy over the more vertical presentation (spinning gear forced some compromises to your instructions). Most of the takers were undersize this time and I had to get off the lake as the heat was overtaking me. What surprised me most was that I easily outfished my son, who was using minnows.
Oh, for those in the tapping, no tapping debate. Tapping seemed to bring them in. Then again, maybe it just kept us occupied until the next swarm came through. I'll keep tapping in my boat. hammer
Anyhow, thanks Dennis for taking the time to share with the forum and everyone else.
