About six years ago, I went to superline and thick wire hooks on everything except C-rig/drop shot/finesse shaky, wacky, Neko

But, I’m starting to rethink that thin wire hooks might give better penetration on long casts with thicker plastics like 7 inch senkos, sluggos, and magnum flukes. Reasoning that the thin wire will penetrate bends or balls in the plastic and then the fish’s mouth easier—especially on long casts. Or will going to thin wire hooks on those baits just create a whole other set of problems?

What wire hook do you use on those baits that can ball up or double bend at the hook set?

I had this same question last year after I dumped a fish in the 14# class at CB on a Mag Fluke. I called around and found a guy from Cali that was kind enough to share some knowledge with me. He has landed three 18# fish in Cali. He told me two of them were the same fish caught a year apart on Lake Dixon. All three came off a bed at short range.

The hook he uses for BIG plastics is a regular wire Gamakatsu 5/0 Offset round bend.

Ahhh, thank you
Losing a good 7lber on a mag fluke earlier this year has had me stewing on this
Set the hook like I was trying to break the rod, reeled her in on full rod bending tension and as I was reaching out to grab her she just let go of it without jumping or anything right at the boat and swam away. The mag fluke was all balled up and you could see the hook didn’t penetrate past the barb.

I only use thin wire vmc offset round bend hooks. And fine wire tungsten shakey heads.

It takes virtually nothing to penetrate with them, a soft rod only takes a flick of the wrist or reel into them, I use floro though not braid.

The issue with flukes is they usually eat them head first so you have the whole bait needing jerked around in there to get the hook into them. Try inserting a twist lock in the nose and using a wide gap wacky hook.

Physics plays a part here for me..
Which would go into your hand better and easier - a #2 pencil or one of the old school "big chief" pencils of old?
I only use thick wire hooks in heavy cover with heavy line and heavy rods where I will be making short pitches and will be really laying into the fish.

Thanks for the feedback.
Really like Gamakatsu hooks (currently use 6/0 superline hooks for Mag Flukes).
Will be trying some of the Gamakatsu round bends.

I do have a package of VMC long shank medium wire hooks laying around in the garage I'll be trying also.

For me it's about the rod, line, bait that determines my wire size. If I'm throwing a senko on 12-15lb test I'm definitely going regular wire. Same with flukes. But if I'm throwing it up in bushes and haygrass and I up to 17-20lb test heavier rod, I'll also go to a heavier hook. If I'm throwing a crig or tx rig big worm I'm pretty much sold on a 5/0 owner jungle wide gap. The wire isn't super thick but it's strong as heck.

I use nothing but Gamakatsu regular wire offset round bend hooks, anything from 2/0 to 5/0 depending on the size of the lure and type of fishing. 95% of the time I'm using a 3/0 or 4/0.

If you use a thin wire hook, you have to lighten up somewhere on your setup to account for the bend in the hook. Whether you use a more forgiving rod or loosen the drag on your reel. My first 10 lber came on a 4/0 Roboworm Rebarb hook on a C-rig (which is just a thin wire Gamakatsu with a keeper) but I was fishing with a MH rod and my drag was much looser than it would be with a standard wire hook. I will use a thicker hook if I'm fishing cover, that's just about it.

superline hooks are designed for the lack of stretch in braided line so the hook doesn't straighten and also when you are using the hook for weight as well.

Yes, I use braid mainline on all my rods.
For mag flukes, I've been using a heavy rod and 50lb braid to six feet of 17lb Pline CXX or 20lb Maxima UltraGreen.

drag? Are you using spinning rods?

I thought everyone kept their drag cinched solid. I know I sure do on everything except my spinning rods because they are light line 8-10lb.

I was having heck snapping light line on hooksets. Tried different line, different knots, pretty much anything I could think of...
Finally had a buddy of mine tell me - "your a big guy(6'5 - 275) using a 7' rod and your jacking the hook on "light" line. No wonder your snapping fish off." I backed off on my drag just a tad and my breakoff on hook sets has greatly diminished.

Have gone to the Gammy G finesse hybrid and love them.

Stick to the regular/ medium wire hooks. For close quarters like flipping you can beef up for drop shots you can go down to a rebarb or something like that. But you do not need that big beefy hook if you are not close with a big rod and big line. I have had tremendous luck with the KVD Fine wire 2x grip pin hooks. But as a whole most the companies have good hooks that are not 2x4's.
