Okay folks taking the dive into the Glide bait market. Research tells me most of these rods Dobyns etc have Fast Action on them which while helps with casting not so good on hook set.. That said what rods are you all throwing on 2.5oz-3.0oz glide baits? Based upon research i'm leaning towards a more moderate/heavy set up however love to get some thoughts, thx...

Biggest concern is on hook up and pinning the trebles..2.5oz allot of leverage for a big fish..

I use the Megabass US Destroyer Mark 48. The Bunker Buster in same series can handle them as well.

That's the reason for a big rod, line, etc. Dont let them use the bait as leverage. Keep them down and horse them in without letting themshake their head. Plus on a long cast you need that long rod to set those big trebles

I have a Dobyns 867 and it can throw anything from a 2.5 oz glide to a 7-9oz glide like a 250

At the moment I am about to build a North Fork Composites SWB809 which is a beast of a blank. Rated up to 10oz. That outta do it. Blank is feather light for the size of it.

Btw...their swimbait series has 5 blanks. SWB805 through SWB809. All 8footers and all 65% off. I own the SWB806 and the 809. Love them both. Checkem out.

I wanted to get into swimbaits/glide baits without spending a ton of money so I got a Dobyns Fury 795SB and paired it with a Lew's Super Duty 300. It's a 7' 9" rod and I like it. It casts the S-Waivers pretty well and I can skip 7 and 8 inch line-through swimbaits under docks with that rod.

I think I paid around $120 for the Dobyns. Okuma makes a Guide Select series that retail around $140 that are pretty good. A lot of the guys throwing slammers and swimbaits in the northeast fish with Okumas and Megabass swimbait rods.

I feel like some guys use this approach to land fish on 2 ounce + flutter spoons. They don't really play the fish so much as they winch them to the net.

When you hook up with a glide bait, you have to crank that sucker to the boat as fast as you can and net it as fast as you can. They toss it pretty easy other wise. And A
LOT of people try and set the hook like a worm, just crank that reel handle and keep grinding it.

Yea. It's the same technique. Neill10 is right. I do give a slight hook set, those are trebles but they are big hooks. Then just crank that handle and keep them moving to the boat

I have an Okuma Guide Select, and it's great for single hooked swimbaits in that size/weight. Not much parabolic action for treble hooks.

I'm cheap and have been using an indestructible Ugly Stik G2 for 1-3oz treble hooked glide baits (great parabolic action)

However, I've been looking at the iROD Genesis rods, specifically:
$150 iROD Genesis II Swimbait Heavy (large swimbait) has a moderate action (parabolic)

Currently using the 8.3 imx pro mh. Throwing golden instigators and deps bullshooter

Liking the glide bait too much is taking Carl Jocumsen down. Kind of like the Whopper Plopper did to Chris Lane. Fun to fish and will catch some biguns but neither is much on consistency.
