This post got me to thinking back on the old ABU Garcia 5000 reels. A bit off topic.

How did we fish with something that only had a 3.8:1 gear ratio ? Most reels today are about twice that.
Or maybe that is why they worked, we fished s-l-o-w-e-r and the fish had time to get the lure without buzzing it by.

I never used anything as old as you linked, but I used to hammer fish on a spinner bait.... The last few years after learning all this cool stuff and upgrading to all high end gear, I havent caught fish on a spinner bait in forever.. I got to thinking its the speed, I used to always use a spinning rod for my spinner bait so I could cast it a mile. I switched to a 5.3 crazy cranker daiwa for my spinner bait and started catching them again..

Now that I have a live scope I see why, with a 6.3 ratio reel I cant hardly go slow enough to keep a spinner bait down.

I tried the Curado 3.8:1 reel and thought it was too slow for my CBs. I prefer a 5.0 or 5.1:1 gear ratio. I converted the 3.8 to a 5 gear ratio and never looked back. Just switching a set of gears and cleaning is all it takes, with the schematic, or course. LOL. I fish mostly Curados and nearly all of mine, except the Super Frees are 5.1:1 ratio, or 5.0:1 ratio, can't remember which it is. If you NEED power over speed, the 3.8: would be the one to go with, but if you are looking for a little speed AND power, the 5 gear ratio might be better. Dunno, to each his own. Hope this helps. Tight lines, keep safe and good luck.

I dont know how we ever survived with these reels that were so slow. My old Ambassadeur says High Speed on the frame and it is a 5.3:1 reel. Some of my favorites over the years have been...
Daiwa TDZ 100m (still have it)
Shimano Curados 200 in 5:1
Daiwa Lexa 100p 4.9:1 ( casts bombs )
Abu Revo Winch ( love the drag)
Abu Garcia Orra
All these reels are great with crankbaits, but I love these reels when using spinnerbaits.

Lew's -

BB1 5.1:1 21 inches-per-turn This is the key info to look at- Lew's has several that will be from 21" to 23" per turn.

The width, depth, etc of the spool may make the reel spec a different gear ratio for a certain reel- like 5.1:1, or 5.4:1, etc

So always look at IPT

Thanks.
