My sister in law had a stroke over a decade ago and it has left her with some disabilities. We used to fish together all the time but I moved out of state for several years and just moved back. I fish often and I can see in her face how difficult it is for her to not be able go with me like she used to. She has lost the use of her left arm and some use of her leg. I have taken her out on the water with me and I held the pole for her while she reeled but she hates needing help. It makes her feel helpless. I am looking into getting a belt and harness in hopes that she will be able to hold the pole herself that way. I’ve also looked into electronic reels but dang they are expensive. She can’t be the first person to have this issue and I’m looking for recommendations on how to best help her independently get back to doing what she loves. Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

Cane pole fishing is an old favorite. She might like that.

I would suggest trying to get her close enough to a rod hold that she can use it. The rod holder could be mounted to a chair, ice chest, or a boat rail. She can cast with her good arm and then set the rod in the holder and reel a fish in by herself. I have seen this done with wheel chairs and the occupant was basically independent. There are harnesses available but they can be hard to use. Great job trying to get her back on the water.

Look, I get it... my wife has 1 leg (she wears a prosthetic but cannot have it around saltwater) and also has 8 fingers, one or two of those are 'placeholders'...

She goes with me because (shock here)....she likes being with me.. I know.. shock.. heh.. but my biggest fear is not her fishing, she does not fish, it is her ability to swim.

No amount of harness is going to help her swim better in the event of an accident, AND... may even hamper her ability to swim in the event of an accident. What I would suggest, which we did, is find a local help group (My wife used to be a member of one.. a mentor actually) and get them to help with the logistics first. I am also betting they will come up with a solution.

And, as much as I hate to say it (because I am cheap.. lol).. I would seriously look into an electric reel. They are not as much fun for US, but they are also not near as tiring. She will still get to do a lot of the things she wants to do, and she can do it more. She can choose to not use the electric reel, till she gets tired, and then she can switch. That way she gets to fish longer.

You'll figure it out and she will be out there fishing soon, I have no doubt...expect a lot of photos of the fish she catches too wink

GL!

Russ

Thank you and yes that has occurred to me also the danger of a harness and being pulled into the water. I am planning to get an automatic inflatable life jacket for that reason but maybe we should not go the harness route. Thanks for the tips I truly appreciate it.

several years ago I watched an amateur bass fisherman on lake Travis.. he had no legs, drove his own boat, no left hand, and minimal appendages on the right hand.. that dude did it all... it was really impressive.

i know there is fear in getting her on the water, and safety does need to be a concern.. Be as safe as you can but help her LIVE. If she or both of you die in an accident LIVING then that's better than dyeing on the couch. I hope I don't make it to 90, I want to go while living, and taking chances. What a way to go.

I wish I could help, but sounds like you're headed in the right direction. You might try Roy Crush of Texas Boys outdoors he helps veterans fish. Also Heros on the Water..same and Also contact Capt Steve Gremillion.. the guy is super sharp with crafting solutions... gowithgrem.com will have his contact info.. he also takes veterans fishing.

It's awesome that you're looking to find a solution for her. Keep looking and let us know what you find !
