Shrimp are frequently on the menu for Speckled trout among other fish. Feed them what they want.

It’s a pain to tie and takes some time just with all the steps. Derived from Casey Smartt’s Shrimp. Works great for shrimp loving fish, went out two days ago to the local bank fishing mud hole where people soak bait for whatever and in spite of 8” visibility water, I managed several small redfish, a decent croaker and a 17” flounder on the shrimp pattern. Nearby bait fishermen weren’t doing nearly as well. The borski slider got zero interest. It had to be the shrimp. I’ll keep tying a few just because they work when other patterns don’t.
Size 2 or 4 60 degree jig hook, mustad duratin. 5/32” slotted tungsten bead 210 denier thread of equivalent 3mm Pyrex rattle Root beer, orange or pearl Estaz Flash Silicone legs 6/0 Czech Glass seed beads 60 pound monofilament EP fiber Steve Farrar Blend
Put bead on hook to hook eye. Put hook in vise hook point down. Wrap hook shank with thread. Put 3mm rattle on top ( will be on bottom at the end) and secure with thread. Position should be blunt end of rattle just to the rear of 60 degree bend.
Move thread to hook bend. Secure 3” of Estaz. Wrap Estaz forward and around both sides of rattle. Form a little ball just forward of hook bend with a few wraps of Estaz. Tie in a couple strands of flash for antenna. Tie in legs, 3 or 4 pairs. Cut 2” 60 pound mono and thread on two beads. Burn one end of mono and push on the bead while still hot and molten, repeat for other bead. Should be about an inch of mono with two beads melted into either end. Loop over end of rattle, beads should be at rear beyond hook bend and facing down at a slight angle ( will be up on finished fly). Secure in eyes with many wraps of thread.
Form 6”dubbing loop near hook bend. Put in a very small amount of EP fiber and form a 5” very thin brush. Wrap forward to tungsten bead. Secure.
Flip over hook in vise. Lay Steve Farrar Blend over the EP to form the shrimp horn and back, about 2” of Steve Farrar Blend. Steve Farrar Blend should fit in between the shrimp eyes. Put a small drop of thin UV and spread over Steve Farrar Blend from hook bend to tungsten bead. Light it up.
Trim EP to form and shape into a shrimp.
Colors are variable. I like menhaden or white EP for body. Steve Farrar Blend, I like mullet brown, burnt orange, light pink, light Chartreuse, purple. I like to put a few strands of black Steve Farrar Blend for the vein. I put in more flash than needed normally and tear out the extra if I think that’s what’s called for.

Croaker on the shrimp. Had a real nice Speckled trout come to hand on the same fly, but dropped it in the water as I removed the hook. Caught a little redfish, too. Fish came in about an hour at the Walk in bank spot again with the wind and brush pinning me in quite a bit. Decided it was too hot for the kayak, hot enough just walking the shoreline.

Thank you Karstapo! For posting the recipe to your shrimp. I dont tie flies but i do tie jigs and i would like to copy your fly but as a jig. Only problem is im a hands on type of guy. I have read your post above and cant picture how you are tying this fly. I wish you had a video or even pics showing you tying it. I'm sure there are others that would appreciate it i know i would
Side note: Nice croaker!

I’ll have to take some photos of the steps next time I tie.

https://www.manictackleproject.com/flyfishingarticlesinkrateofnymphsinrivers/I’m a big believer in using tungsten if a quick sink rate is desired. Use less weight than lead, but still get a faster sink. See link above if you want a comparison of sink rates between the materials. I fish a lot of drop offs and reef margins and the sink rate is super important to hitting the zone where the fish are. Weight is the enemy of fly fishing, so the idea is to have the least weight possible to get to the fish holding and feeding zone. I’ve done the shrimp with 3/16” countersunk tungsten beads, but prefer it with the 5/32” slotted tungsten. Keeping the EP brush sparse helps aid the sink rate, too. Tiny little details matter in making flies, at least some of the time. People say throw whatever at them, it doesn’t matter, but that’s only true some of the time at best. I think or believe the relatively big 6/0 glass eyes help balance the fly and also really draw the fish in for the eat. I’ve fished eyeless shrimp (eyes got pulled off by the fish) and don’t do nearly as well with the eyeless versions. Rattles sometimes break too and those ones without functioning rattles don’t do quite as well either. The two blunt end micro rattles are the best, but hard to find at times.

https://caseysmartt.com/2011/07/08/tying-smartts-shrimp/Casey Smartt’s Shrimp SBS. He bands different colors of EP, but the Menhaden color EP is a pretty similar mix of colors. His shrimp has a downward hook point and isn’t weighted. I tied and fished a few early on and they definitely work and look just like a shrimp in the water. They aren’t real good in the oyster shell, IMO, and aren’t very useful in current or if there’s any depth to the water and using floating fly line. The weed guard is only minimally effective around shell. I only fish hook point up patterns in shell and tend to not like weed guards overall. Stainless hooks, especially that mustad hook he calls for, the points bend with the least little contact with oyster shell and are hard to repair with a hook file after the damage is done. The points will curl over into a mini hook shape.
