Went down to Big Sam to test out a new to me boat Thursday morning. Got to fish a couple of hours Thursday afternoon and got on em until...my buddy had a big spot drive a treble hook in his palm. He was scared of the "string trick" and took nearly an hour messin around with it. Finally gave in and I popped it out in less than one minute. Boat was great and made the deal!! Went out yesterday and we caught over 50. Didnt get the Big Sam big un (4.4 was big fish), but gosh what a smack down on 1- 3 pounders! Big fish came on a spook. Most on 200 series Bandits, 6xd's and CR's off main lake points.. Headed home this morning with the new ride! Thank you Big Sam. My first time down in 20 years! I'll be back!!

Got a '17 Legend 199 from Trace at Mallard Marine in Nacogdoches. Fits in my garage with about 3" to spare! Awesome boat and a good young guy just getting his shop up and running. Cool to see a young guy with that much business savvy at his age. Thanks Trace! Any of you boys down near Sam Rayburn area give Trace a shout if you need some work done on your boat. He installed a brand new 36volt Ultrex on it yesterday and I can't wait to get out there and try it out today!

Thanks Donald Harper for the help getting started! We smacked em where you sent us!! We didn't catch any really big fish so didn't take pics, but man, what a day of catching! Reminded me of the old days down at Lake Fork when catching over 100 bass was not unusual during the dog days of summer. Just got home last night and the wife took a few pics of the new boat. I'll see if I can get em up and posted.

As far as areas, the first afternoon around since we were staying at Lakeview hotel, we put in at Cassels Boykin ramp and just went straight across to the flats and point right there. Unfortunately my buddy hooked the biggest catch of the day...his hand. And we were off the lake in a couple of hours.
Thursday we took Don Harpers advice. Put in at Caney and fished that area. Found some good points and drop offs out in 10' - 22' that were holding tons of bait and worked them. My best fish came first thing on a Zara Spook at first light. Didn't take a pic cause we thought we would probably get a better one than that. But that's ok. We probably caught 15 3 pounders. The others ran from a pound to 2 or 2.5. We didn't care. Old guys out smackin em and laughing our old rear ends off about it. That's what fishing is all about. New boat, good friends, and catching em. Couldn't have asked for more!

Thanks Ken, and thanks for the info on Sam. Since I technically didn't own the boat until yesterday, but got to drive while we were waiting on the new Ultrex to arrive, I was a little hesitant to drive around very much in areas that weren't "wide open" so we stayed pretty close to both ramps we put in at and avoided any timbered areas. I am def headed back, will get Lance's boat lane, and hit Big Sam with a vengeance next time down. I looked on Navionics map at some of the areas you mentioned and they look awesome. Surprisingly, maybe because we were in open water out deeper than 10 feet most of the time, we weren't fishing very much vegetation if any. FYI, the Eagles Nest has some pretty good burgers. Thanks for the Lakeview referral. It was great. Breakfast was really good and the dang AC's in that place will give you frost bite! LOL. Thanks again Ken for your help. Maybe we can meet for a "soda" next time I'm down there.

Fivebites, youre gonna absolutely LOVE that 199! You obviously know about the quality of the Legends and that 199 is gonna ride like a Cadillac! Glad you got on some fish on Sam, it can be a hit or miss kinda place at this time of year. I look forward to seeing the pics of another Legend! Theyre some beautiful boats. Whoever ends up with your old 191 will become a very proud owner!
