How much hydraulic fluid should you have in your steering system? In other words, when I unscrew my little fluid cap above my steering wheel should my fluid be topped off so that I am able to see it? My steering seems to be loose but at the same time I am not able to see any fluid when I open the little cap. Not sure if its low or if I should be able to see the fluid.

Agreed, you should be able to see it. I had to reseal mine and it was very easy. Instructions say to top the fluid off.

Depends on the brand, on my seastar if you open the system and introduce air you have to bleed it with new or recycled fluid until you get all the air out.

Bloo_rainger, first thing is to check under the ends of your hydraulic cylinder at your motor to see if you have a leak. I noticed an oil film on the water at the back of my boat about the same time my steering got mushy and had oil leaking at the seals. Mine is a Seastar on a Champion 188DC and it has a tube that extends to the top of the console so it has a reserve. Like others have said it is not real hard to replace both seals on the cylinder, it just takes some time to get it purged of air. The kit I purchased even came with the spanner wrench to remove and tighten the new seal holders.

Air compresses but fluid does not. When there is air in your system turning the wheel compresses the air before it turns the actual motor. When the system is completely air free the response time between your steering wheel and motor are exact.
These systems work just as car breaks do and require the system to be free of air.

Thanks, my cylinder is dirty as if there is some leaking but its not an obvious drip where its visible to see the fluid dripping. Think I will get a kit and replace the seals and refill with fluid. That should fix me up.
