As part of our renewal they want to inspect the outside of the house. We've had them for 20+ years. Is that normal?

We've been in this house 16 years, so I don't know if they do a 20 year re-inspection. They did an inspection when we bought the place. Changed insurance companies too about 2 years ago. Hide your still and hydroponics garden and let em look around.

They are looking at your roof and any rotten wood that will cause water damage

Common practice for insurance companies and mortgage holders to send out an inspector - I'm surprised they asked.

They want to take pictures of your roof. If it's at the end of its useful life, they will not replace it after the next hail storm.

Like Dan said... I'm surprised they asked. Im also surprised that insurance companies don't do this more often. If I'm the insurance company, I want before pictures of every house that I cover!

We've been here for 21 years and that never happened to us.

Its the tires on the roof. That's the secret.

Safeco sent out an inspector on one of my customers and he flew a drone around then informed the homeowner the roof needed replacing because corners were turned up on shingles. Cancelled her policy until complete. I walked the roof and found hail and wind damage now Safeco has to pay up.
Im sure it works out in their favor more often than not.

My fence is the only real problem, but they won't pay for that anyway. Also missing a small piece of siding on an eve. Roof is good.

Yes, I always put Michelins on top of mine, nothing but the best. When people from God's country say they recently retired it's not what you think.

Take those catfish heads off your fence and it might look a little better.

I changed insurance companies at the recommendation of my agent and had to do a self inspection by providing digital pictures of my house from 4 sides, the roof, the a/c system, heating system, breaker box, faucet and toilet plumbing and the dog. It was a PITA but I saved $228. Not bad for an hours worth of work taking and texting pics.

Did you think to ask them why to see what they had to say?

I figure if they didnt like what they saw on the pics and refused service to me, I would just sign with the next closest insurance offer which was with my previous insurance company. I think once they exclude hail and tornado claims, most of their remaining claims are made by people who dont take care of their houses. People ignore leaky roofs and leaky faucet plumbing and then expect the insurance company to cover water damage and mold. People also lie about their dogs breed claiming the dog is not a pure bred. From the picture, it was pretty obvious our dog is a mutt mix with probably 50% Corgy in there.
