Hooked this Bass today at Ray Roberts while crappie fishing. ( not the best photo but wanted to be fish back in the water quickly) Scale read 6 lbs 3 oz. Head and mouth looked way larger than should in relation to the body.

Question I have , is this normal? Are the bass struggling to find enough food to maintain their weight? Or was this just a malnourished specimen.?

looks like he might have missed a meal or three.
I normally see this in small lakes or ponds but will occasionally catch one like this out of a lake.

On Holbrook I regularly catch fish that like that on one side of the lake and the other side will have fat football shaped fish.

Guess that why he was hanging around a brush pile and hit a small crappie jig. Other than body not being in proportion to his headsize, he looked ok. Trying to make up for lost meals. Fun to catch on a light crappie rig anyways.

I caught a bunch like that in the best lake in Iowa Saturday. They were so thin it seemed like you could see thru them even the 4-4.58lb ones I had... Cant say Ive ever seen so many thin bass... Just 5 weeks ago it took 23 lb to win a tourney there with the top 8 being above 20#.

I dont know. <G>. I started out bass fishing , got skunked, then decided to hit a brush pile before heading to the ramp. The bass hit on my jig on the first drop. I decided to call it quits after the bass.

Big head and small body is a sign of age.

Fish looks skinny, not sickly. Look around you. See skinny people and fat people? Exactly. Sometimes I believe its just that simple.

It burns a lot of calories chasing those schools of 1/2 long shad.

I have boated a couple of these long skinny bass a few years ago. I believe that they may be on their last leg of their life cycle.
