Thanks for your points Mike@972. I always appreciate the right and need to defend ourselves with the craziness that is out there these days. And by no means do I disagree with anyone on this thread.
As far as your point on carrying at church. I TOTALLY agree. As a matter of fact, my new business in retirement is in Emergency Preparedness, focusing on Church Security Planning. Churches are SO vulnerable. The majority of Medium and Small churches have never had anything happen to them, and ofttimes don't understand the need for Emergency Plans and Procedures. Larger churches might have not had anything happen, but they tend to have more robust security. My church has a security team, greeters and ushers, but they need procedures and training.
My company provides: Overall Safety and Security Assessments, Emergency Response Plans, Written Security Procedures, and Training / Exercise Design.
Great Thread going here. The Good Guys need to WIN! ! !

The only way you can carry a firearm on any Corps of Engineers lake is to be hunting under a USACOE permitted program or submit a written request and obtain approval to do so at the discretion of the governing District Commander. https://corpslakes.erdc.dren.mil/employees/cecwon/pdfs/18May14-FirearmsPossessionGuidance.pdf
You get out of it what you put into it!

Sometimes I have fished late and walk to truck and its dark. In this day and age and remote areas we can kayak fish, do carry on your yak?
I have a 400.00 .45 in a retention holster as long as I make sure she is oiled and I keep me vest on I am good to go.
What say you? I think everyone here is commenting in good faith, but most aren't experts in the law. I would suggest that you contact police, sheriff, or maybe the Corps of Engineers at a minimum in the area in which you carry. IMO the best source is a lawyer that you pay for an opinion. Again, comments here may be 100% correct, I would just want to be sure.

I could have posted first in this topic but choose not to. I've followed along with interest. For those of you who only carry when you think that you will need your gun I have a short scenario for you:
If you have fire alarms in your house and have a fire extinguisher, please bag them all up and take them to you closest neighbor. Tell the neighbor that you won't need these today because you know that you won't have a fire today. Tell them you will only come and collect these vital pieces of safety gear on the days that you think that you will have a fire.
Bad things happen to good people even in good neighborhoods. I don't know what crystal ball you are all using, but I have no idea when I will need my safety gear and teach my students to carry everyday. As Clint Smith once said, carrying isn't suppose to be comfortable, it's suppose to be comforting. It's takes commitment to carry everyday. It's not easy, it's not cool, it's a necessity for my safety and the safety of my family.
You get to make decisions based around your family's safety, I know what I choose to do and again, it's not the easy choice.

Clay, I am pro Second Amendment. I have a concealed carry permit (and carry on occasion), I have a gun in my nightstand and three long guns in my closet. I am pro-gun. However, to compare a gun to a fire extinguisher is not a fair comparison. A fire extinguisher can never be used in a way to kill an innocent person or to land you in jail (unless you hit someone on the head with it ) The average person will have virtually no chance in their lifetime to ever to use a gun in self-defense. However, every day someone carries, they have a chance to use the gun inappropriately... They get angry and flash it in a fit of road rage, they get in a fight and it gets taken from them, they get scared and shoot an unarmed person, they go vigilante and attempt to stop a shoplifter, it goes off and shoots their own butt while getting into the car, or they simply drop it and it goes off. I did not make up any of these examples. I read about several of these examples every year and rarely read an example of someone actually saving a life outside of their home. Most recently, I read about an off duty FBI agent whose gun fell out of his holster while dancing. A round went off and hit a guy in the leg. The agent was charged with 2nd-degree assault and got off with two years probation.... if he was not an agent, he would have likely served time over the incident. I do not intend to debate. I greatly appreciate everyone perspective, I agree with the spirit of your example and I realize that everybody is not in an "average" situation. However, the risks of carrying a gun are not often communicated and many people underappreciate the risk that they take on every time they leave the house. Simply put, very little can go right and much can go wrong. Lets go fishing sometime and

Mike, I think that it is wise to consider your legal exposure while carrying. It's not for everyone. Some read the law and take it as a fixed truth. When you see police officers who follow their training and still are sued, you have to realize that while you follow your training and use a firearm how you think is legal, you must understand that you will have some legal exposure. No one is going to hail you as some kind of hero.
I know nothing about what is going on in El Paso TODAY at the Walmart, but I just came home from shopping in the middle of the day in full sunlight and most people THINK that they are safe. No one would have thought that by shopping in the middle of the day that they would be exposing their family to grave danger.
I'm glad that we live in America and I can't make a decision for my family that is legal and you get to make a different decision for your family's safety as long as it's legal.
Neither one of us will change our opionions based on this conversation and that is OK in American. Sometimes, it's nice to have the discussion without all of the emotion.
Stay safe.

Stay safe. Agreed! My position on issues has sometimes been influenced (and sometimes completely changed) by logical discussions with folks who have opposing views... but never from being screamed at, belittled, or insulted.

As I find out more information about the El Paso situation, my thoughts and prayers go out to all those who are affected by these events.
No matter what your personal opinion is, try to stay situationally aware.
For those of you who choose to carry, take some qualified training from a local trainer. One more note: if you train to take a life, remember to train to save a life. Not really in the scope of this thread, but a very small, simple med kit can save lives in the event that you need them.
Hope all that read this thread never need a firearm to protect their family or loved ones.
