First alligator gar we have ever caught. I've caught a ton of longnose gar, but never an alligator gar. It weighed 23 lbs and tasted good! Very firm, reminded me of chicken

Awesome! Perfect eating size! Where did you catch him at?

So many ppl think they are ugly but I think they are beautiful and probably one of the neatest fish that swim in our state. A lot of ppl don’t realize how old they get too. A buddy of mine shot a 210 pounder from amistad and a biologist aged it at 75 years old! Match that with Splash (121 pound blue cat from texoma was only aged at 23-25 years old). Neat fish! Great catch.

Fried it along with some catfish that we caught on the same trip. Used Louisiana Fish Fry....it was good but a lot firmer than the catfish which was nice and flaky. It really was like chicken!
