My family and I are headed to Galveston next weekend and I plan on surf fishing with my sons and daughter. We typically head down to the the west end of the island right before San Luis pass. We have done it before but I am nervous about allowing my kids to fish close to ANY one within like than 50 yards. (Swimmers, people walking on beach, etc)

Are there unwritten rules?

There are... but those who follow them are highly outnumbered by the droves of people out enjoying a day at the beach with no realization or regard for the unwritten rules. Safe to say that you need to stay as far up/down current from the next fisherman as possible. It's a social fishing faux paux to cross lines so try to avoid that at all cost. Even if you get a free slice of beach somebody is bound to come out and start swimming right across your line if there is a current. Keep an eye on them, don't let them get hurt as a result of something you do and be mindful of your surroundings.

And have fun. Rule #1.

If a swimmer gets near just grab your rod and holler SHARK ON!

The closer you get to SLP, the swimmers will get fewer and fewer and the fishermen will get more and more. If the weather is good on a weekend, it will be difficult to find a spot 50 yds away from the next guy with his surf rods lined out.

Hook up with a 5ft shark and when you get it shallow start yelling shark while it is thrashing around. Guaranteed, you will not see swimmers for 100+ yards.

Welcome to the forum!

Get there EARLY and establish your spot. If swimmers come in and start swimming around you I usually reel em in and move. I'm usually fishing for trout and when swimmers show up the trout move on.

You get out of it what you put into it!

It never fails. You can have 400 yards of beach on each side of you people free, get set up and low and behold a family of 12 set up 15 yards from ya. Just yesterday I was out with customers and had 4 shark rods out and 2 surf rods out. A family decided that looked like a great place to swim so they pulled within 20 yards and go to town. There was beach for days on both side of me that they couldve went to. But some folks do it because they want to see the fish you catch. A 6ft bull shark being brought in gets them out of the water pretty quick though.

One time I was wade fly fishing in the surf on a mostly deserted weekday morning beach when in the corner of my right eye I see some jack wagon with a fishing rod is coming up from behind about 15-20 feet from me wading out to fish. He must have waded up behind me right through where my back cast was and how he didnt get hooked Ill never know.

I said to him did you not see me fishing here? He shrugs his shoulders and mumbles something. I say then do you know how lucky you were not to get a hook stuck in you? Another mumbling, blank look. I do look around when I fly fish to make sure no one is coming into the casting zone so as to avoid catching them, but Im or I was less vigilant on a wide open beach thinking what idiot would come up behind me like that. I guess the nitwit couldnt stand seeing a bent rod when he drove by so he hopped out and waded up as close as he did to get on the fish.

He didnt get on the fish, although he could have. The trout were thick in the first gut, but being as thick as he was, he fished in the second gut out beyond me where there were no fish. He couldnt even get pot licking right. I began to feel sorry for him having to go through life being so helpless and dense.
