Looking at a triton vt 17 with a 50 hp merc. I’m not looking to win any races but don’t want to be completely under powered. Can anyone speak from experience what I could expect out of a setup like this? I’ve had the big 21.5 bass boat with a 225. I want something efficient and low maintenance to fish a few times a month. Any help appreciated

It will be fine. You'll be able to hit 30-35MPH and you must be more careful, especially on the 'big' lakes.

RB77, I appreciate the reply. When you say careful on the big lakes am I just concerned with wind and waves coming up or is there something else i’m Missing?
Thanks!

That's it. Those boats are small and lightweight. If you are used to driving a bigger bass boat, you will just need to be more cautious with the wind and waves. I was on a smaller aluminum boat several years ago on Tawakoni when a storm blew up. While heading back to the ramp, the boat got swamped by a large wave. The whole thing took no more than 15 seconds until I was swimming. My fishing partner and I were both wearing our life jackets. Otherwise, I would not have made it.

Hey I have a Triton aluminum VT 17. Its my second one in 10 years. I like it.
Mine has a 2 Stroke Mercury Optimax 115 HP with a Jack Plate.
With the right conditions and trim I can go around 40 mph. I bet in the most perfect of conditions I could get up to 45...
LMK if I can answer anymore questions on this specific boat.

So would you expect a night and day difference between a 75 hp and a 50 on this boat?
