Been catching plenty of crappie in May in June with jigs only. Never even changed color jigs. Last three trips in July we catch less than half of what we normally catch.
I'm thinking about trying minnows. Anybody else have to use minnows in the summer?

I will say try downsizing if you haven't done that. I have been doing good on a tiny 1.25 inch jig with nibbles. If that doesn't work, then I would get some small minnows. I have saw where stopping for minnows makes the difference between going him with nothing and going home with a limit too many times to count. There are times of the year on the lakes that I fish that I HAVE to have minnows if I want to catch any numbers.

Another vote on downsizing. I fished this morning and had to go down to half the size of bait Ive been using. Lots of short strikes and misses until I changed. Once I did I caught a good mess. Same color just smaller.

Try cutting up a minnow and adding it to a jig. It works.

If you don't want the mess of dealing with minnas just down size and add scent to your jig.... Crappe nibbles work great and the are several other scents that work great too..... Good info in my latest vid if you have time to watch it.... no minnas required.....

Thanks for the replies. Sunday evening I took 5 dozen minnows to a brushpile. There was 3 of us and we ran through 60 minnows in an hour and a half! We were hanging the brushpile frequently and of course lost the minnow each time. But the crappie definitely liked the minnows. We came home with 20 something and 3 over 13". When we ran out of minnows we couldn't get a bite on jigs.
Next time i'm thinking about using a slip bobber to keep the depth of the minnow from hanging the brush. Thoughts?

I was crappie fishing on Navarro Mills a couple of weeks ago. I had minnows and jigs, but was using jigs and niblets and not doing real well. A couple of guys floated past in float fishing outfits and were doing real well with minnows. I switched to minnows and did real well. Then they quit biting and I tried the jigs again (swapping out various colors) and caught some more crappie.
Next time I go out, Ill try both.
Mostly I just lurk and learn on this forum, not being a superstar fisherman, but wanted to comment on this issue.

I refuse to buy minnows by the dozen. I find someplace that sells them by weight.

Last time I was out on Roberts a few weeks ago, I was using a minnow on a jig head. It worked great and the minnows worked dead or alive.
See you on the lake and have a great day!

Look like 50 to one one using minnas so I'll just sit back and continue tossing limits in my boat while using jigs.....
