Fished LBJ today and went to the dam to fish the grass. I guess LCRA killed it all. I looked every where I knew, but nothing. I guess the fishing will go downhill like Lake Austin.

I fished it during the spring after the flood and it was everywhere. Now it is gone.

They nuked Marble Falls lake few years back, I found the announcement. It was some sort of copper based chemical. It effectively screwed up fhe bass fishimg on that lake and after 10 or so trips, I have never been back. I don't know if they nuked LBJ, but if they did the grass isn't coming back, because that copper based chemical has staying power. I was hoping the flood washed it out of marble falls.

I do remember the water looking tea stained and conditions like a lake turn over. I think I was fishing after they nuked Marble Falls lake. After that the grass never came back. Has anyone seen the same sort of conditions before the grass went bye bye on LBJ?

They did our two powerplant lakes over 30 years ago and grass has never returned if that makes you feel better!
I'm serious, not joking!

The floods did not remove the grass, just 3 months ago, there was milfoil and awesome looking hyrdilla. The flowers or petals on the hydrilla were an inch apart on the stalk and about 6-8 ft tall and green as green can be...you can tell how good the grass is by the presence of Coots, that is what they eat. I was there 2 weeks ago and it is gone, annihilated. Yes they poisoned it or did whatever means necessary to remove it and they did that for sure. Another fishery messed up. TPWD has little to do with it...If it was their decision they would have left it alone. You need to look towards the HOA on the lake. Just like Austin, it was FOLA and City of Austin....Politics at its best.

That's what I was afraid of. I was planning a trip up there this week. What parts of the lake were affected, Don? I like to fish up by Kingsland, that part of the Llano River and the Colorado. Do you know for sure about that area? It's a big lake.

I have a place on LBJ and i have definitely noticed a decrease in grass. If this was done intentionally by a local town or HOA, they definitely kept it quiet because nobody out here has a clue why it is happening.

If someone sprayed it with the same stuff they put on the grass in the Tennessee Bay and Jesse Lowe bay areas of Toledo Bend it will not be back soon either.

Well here's part of your answer. Looks like homeowners have taken it upon themselves to deal with it. This sucks. I wonder if the LCRA is privy to this info?

I had to run an errand in Granite Shoals, so I went up to Kingsland today to see the condition of the Lions Club ramp post flood. The ramp is in good condition with new cleats on new courtesy docks. Good parking in the expanded lot.

Two bummers today: first, all the places I used to fish that had lots of grass had none. The water wasn't very clear and looked silty. This is up by the confluence of the Colorado and Llano river area. I didn't explore upriver on the Llano, though perhaps I should have. I think in those areas the lack of grass was due to the flood and not by organized homeowner action. There's lots of undeveloped property up in that area.

Second bummer... and probably my fault for trying to fish at 3:30 on Friday afternoon when the armada of wakeboard boats and jetskiers turned the lake into a churning mess of conflicting wave action. Took water over the bow several times. I did sneak into a couple of protected coves and boated 3 LMBs in the 1 lb range. Got off the water a 5pm, making it a 1.5 hour trip.

All, I contacted the LCRA to inquire about legality of homeowners putting herbicides into ANY lake and here was the response:

Christina Oliver

to me

Good afternoon Mr. Smith,

As a general rule, LCRA discourages the use of herbicides in the lake. Aquatic plants and algae are part of the lake ecosystem and provide vital habitat for fish and other aquatic organisms, and we encourage property owners to use non-herbicidal remedies if management is necessary.

That said, LCRA does not object to the use of Cutrine Plus to control excessive amounts of aquatic vegetation as long as it is applied according to label directions. It is the law to strictly follow label directions. Aside from Cutrine Plus, its also common to use a chelated copper herbicide such as Harpoon or Nautique for nuisance vegetation control.

No forms or permission are required before using Cutrine Plus according to the label directions.

Beyond that, under the State Aquatic Vegetation Plan, organizations, including LCRA, and individuals wishing to conduct vegetation management activities in public water must first submit a Treatment Proposal for review by TPWD and local controlling entities.

A treatment plan should be submitted to Marcos De Jesus, district supervisor, at marcos.dejesus@tpwd.texas.gov. The treatment proposal form and additional information are available on the TPWD website.

TPWDs guidance document offers a detailed list of approved herbicides.

If you have additional questions, please feel free to contact Dave Bass, an LCRA senior coordinator for water quality, at Dave.Bass@LCRA.ORG.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance,

Christina

I would be very interested in what Mr Dave Bass has to say.
