Going to South Padre in a couple weeks.. going with a bunch of people who have never fished, and I figured we could go and catch some snapper... anyone have recommendations?

Hey sorry no one responded. Have you gone yet? If the seas are calm, a good bay guide can get you on some state water snapper.

Todd Lohry (REEL Madness) runs a sportfisher as does Mike Walker (Salt Walker)

Bryan Ray runs a CC that can get that for you too. Google these guys.

As for bay guides, I like the guys out of Island Outfitters.

Are all the charters in the $475 plus tip range for three? Seems like a hell of a lot of 5 hrs.

If the 475 is for all three, Your basically looking at a half day for around 160. Thats probably not including tip. Unfortunately with he cost of fuel and insurance these days not to mention a first mates pay for commercial enterprises thats probably not that bad. If its 475 ea. Way to much.

A normal near shore trip for me up to 9 miles offshore is 550 for three people. Runs about 7 hours. Took a group of 4 out Saturday and had a limits of red snapper (4 each state waters) by 10 am.

Take a party boat . You get your snapper and costs around $80.

And 10 sick people, 2 hour both way boat ride, janky fishing tackle, and no trolling or trying any other kind of fishing.

We normally hammer the snapper in about 2 hours. Done by 9am then look for a cobia or state water amberjack. Then troll for kings around wrecks. You can't beat the amount of fishing you get for our cost.
