What method are you looking to use? Casting swimbaits? Live Bait? Jigging? Generally speaking, a good 7'MH rod with a good backbone will do it all. I like Lews Super Duty reels on my jigging and casting setups, and ABU 6500's on my bait rigs. You can do any of the above with either type reel, that is just my preference.

I agree with tck73, I troll alot for stripers using umbrella rig. I have several baitcasters but my favorite is Abu Garcia 6500 on 7' mh rod. Reel hold alot of line. I troll with 100-150 yards out, its alot of fun and fighing when you hook those sripers and hybrids. 6500 works well
