I checked out Joe Pool lake this morning starting about 5:45. The small bluegill were on fire. I don't know where the big ones were hanging out. About 9:00 the fish decided they did not want to play any more, and they quit.

i kept 16 for a fish dinner. Why 16? Because my stringer has eight snaps and I double up. I caught more than twice that many, and some of the later ones were bigger than the ones I had strung, but i did not bother to cull the fish.

It was hot and sultry and I had the Lynn Creak Marina pier all to myself.

At this time of year I fish on the outside of the crappie house on the extended portion of the pier facing the bridge. I cast toward the rock rip rap. I set my slip bobber to about 4 feet depth and cast close to the rocks, The bites usually come just as the line is pulled back until the bait is just off the bottom.

As the morning wears on, the bites will come deeper. Also, casting under the bridge on the left hand side will produce bites.

The water too far from the structures will not have fish. I see people throwing a bait halfway to the rocks or bridge and never getting a bite.

The water weeds were killed off this last couple of years when the lake was up. The biggest fish are caught when the water weeds are healthy. Then I fish the edge of the weeds.

I fillet the fish, then lay the fillets on a paper towel and blot them dry. Coat the fillets with mustard, then dip them in corn meal. Deep fry until a crispy golden brown. I serve them with french fries, fried onion rings and hush puppies.
