Fellas, Great weekend. Fished and also toted the yak further than I have. Roughly 100 yards each way. Do have the cart that mounts thru the transom, but while hauling it back, thought. Dadgum. Getting weak or this thing weighs more than 62 lbs. We put it on scales. Yak came in at 72 lbs and the seat/base was 16 lbs. so 86 pounds total.

I weigh a buck ten so pretty proud I was able to do this. Yes, my hubby is there to help, but I want to do this on my own. He has his own vessel to wrestle with.

If I could shave even 10 pounds off, it'd help.

Here's my current seat configuration, which is not original. Checked Nu Canoe's sight and they are mighty proud of their 360 pinnacle seat.

If y'all have any thoughts/idea's would love to hear them.

That's a lot for a 10' kayak. I think most kayak manufacturers fudge on their weight specs. Shaving off weight is gonna be tough. Might look at a good cart system. Boondox landing gear are crazy expensive but honestly they would make it a lot easier to move your yak around.

Janie, in the future if you trade for a new kayak, why don't you take a look at an Eddyline Caribbean 12 Angler.

It is 12 feet by 30", weighs 45 lbs. and there isn't a better looking kayak on the water. 300 lbs. max carrying capacity . . . but Eddyline subtracts the weight of the vessel, so 255 lbs. More than enough for you at 110 lbs.

Just a guess that most kayak manufacturers just make up most of their stats. They certainly do on maximum carrying capacity. I think several fudge on weight, too, wanting to appear lighter than they really are.

It's probably high density polyethylene and not medium density polyethylene as many kayaks are. Not much you can do to shave the weight off.

Im not trying to say anything bad about your kayak. Its just a heavy kayak. Not bad if you can depend on friends to help but possibly try to take a look at the viking profish 400. It weighs like 45 lbs and holds 400lbs. Its hard to take away from a kayak but easy to add to them. My 13 yo son handles it very well. He weighs 106lbs.

Going lighter on weight from your present kayak, you will have to give up the stability you now have with the NuCanoe.
Since you like your kayak and the stability, going lighter in weight, anything else won't be the same as your present kayak.

With that transom mounted cart you are basically carrying the entire front half of the kayak and nothing you do is going to reduce that unless the wheels are moved forward under the kayak to produce a balancing point where more weight can be shifted to the rear.
You can probably get by with one of those "tug" type carts that fit under the kayak and are strapped on.
Not too sure the landing gear model will take much weight away since the wheels still end up pretty far back and not forward enough to hit the sweet spot or a balancing point.
Placing the cart under the kayak about the forward location of the seat, you should be able to lift the front of the kayak using two fingers, and if not, just move it a little further forward.
Try a different cart first, before throwing money at another kayak you may or may not like.

If you are handy with PVC or your husband is, y'all can build your own cart with some all thread from the Home Depot, and a couple of wheels that you could take off your old cart, and be all set.

This is my homemade cart under my kayak and it balances out where I'm holding very little weight when I pick up the front of the kayak, and even less if I load up the tank well!

If you were to decide to build a cart I would suggest that you stay away from any type of scupper hole cart.
That is the type that would use the scupper holes to attach the cart to the hull, and since you have a heavy kayak, and plan on going long distances, possibly over rough terrain, that type of cart puts a lot of stress on the scuppers which are probably the weakest place on a kayak hull, and not to mention they weren't designed for attaching a cart and carrying the entire weight of the kayak plus gear.

70lb for a kayak is not heavy in today's standards. 86lb is a bit heavy.
Industry uses the term "Hull weight" for their listed weight; sometimes another term "fitted weight" etc.
Maybe the listed 62lb is hull weight, which excludes all the fittings that are attached to the hull (tracks, foot braces, hatch covers, bungees etc...).

The seat base and the seat are a bit heavy but they are super nice and are an integral part of the Nucanoe design. Great boat!
