I bet Chuck never caught any of these types of Cichlids in the Hill Country I was in Miami this week so I took the time to fish a couple canals in the evenings. I was hoping to catch a peacock bass, as well as, some Cichlids, but no luck yet. I'm going back next week so I hope I can find a few then. Mayan Cichlid Midas Cichlid

Beautiful fish Jamie. You are right I have not caught any of the above. I do plan on taking some out of state trips in the next couple of years and have a bucket list of fish that I would love to catch. The Peacock Bass was one of them. I will add the above two. Side Note: No you cannot claim out of state records for Texas records!

J-Moe , those are some pretty fish, are they native? They kind of look like some kind of perch.

Very cool Jamie. Bet you find yourself holding a few more species, when you get back. Good luck on the Peacocks

Thanks Chuck, Rick, Alan, Fitz, LO, Will, Doctorxring and Grampy for the comments. Darn Chuck, that's not fair, especially since you claim aquarium fish Grampy, they are not native. The cichlids were likely introduced by people throwing out their aquarium fish. They did intentionally introduce peacock bass in the area to try and control the explosion of tilapia. They are relatives of the Rio Grande Cichlids we have here in Texas. Fitz, I caught them on a spinning rod and white bread. I didn't have a fly rod that would fit in my carry on so I brought a spinning reel and bought a cheap spinning rod when I got there. Sure wish I had one though. I bet they would love a crawfish briminator too. LO, I noticed the same thing.

I I caught some of them at the channels in Ft Lauderdale about 3 years ago they where nesting. We where catching peacock bass and Mayan cichlids. Only caught 2 of the midas they look a lot like a rio down to the big ole bump in the head for the males. they are really strong fighters
