Lake Athens
I have been bass fishing for too many years to count. I have fished so many Texas lakes but this little gem was not one of them.
Until This July 3 morning. 6:58 am Launch.
Having No experience on the lake we idled out admiring all the beauty of the lake. Passing the no wake zone we motored out to the first Major point across the lake.
With overcast morning , I thought i could get a top water bite over the top of the grass. Never happen. After about a hour we moved to another point just across front the first point. Changing to working a jig and Senko Around the edge of the grass. The grass we fished was good looking but to no production for use. 1 about 13 inches.
It was now around 9:30 and we were seeing the locals out on humps, points and ridges, We now seen what the locals we doing.
But seen no one working the Docks. I sat down and took the map screen to full page. Located the closet deep dock. And idled over to it drinking the last of my coffee.
We set the boat in the slight breeze and spot locked it down. Second pitch with a jig produced a 4 plus.Still working the same dock i skipped a senko up under the dock as far as i could skip, another 3 plus. Both fish were Long and skinny. Fished the next two docks and nothing.
That is when it all fell together. We figured out how to fish the docks and what kind of grass mixture that the fish were relating to. We still moved from deep water dock to deep water dock for another 5 hours. And i have to admit the lake master map sure was spot on We even seen the car up by the dam.
Caught lots of great fish.
The highlights of the day were Robert my friend catching a 7+ and myself catching a 8.13. What a Gem of a lake.
We fished from 7 am till 9 pm. Fished hard and caught tons of bass.
Knowing the Regulations for the lake,, Our Best 5 would bump 33 pounds. legal limit would be right at 29
