I was fishing a bass tournament this weekend and at day break there was a lot of fish busting the surface. I just assumed carp or hybrid. Then I seen two close to my boat and they was blue cats. How do you go about catching these guys? Live bait on a bobber?

Were there a bunch of may flies on top of the water by any chance?

Reason I ask is because I was on Richland Chambers this weekend. Every morning there were tons of May flies on the water. All kinds of fish were feeding on them. Could be a reason why catfish might be feeding top water.

Used to see lots of big yellow grasshoppers on top at Ray Roberts some summers. When they were thick the catfish would come up and feed on em. Never really fished for them but sometimes my customers would throw a popR or torpedo into them and catch one.

Some people go to church and think about fishing. Some go fishing and think about God.

When the mayflies or grasshoppers are on the surface the channel and blue catfish will gorge themselves on them, particularly at night. Best bet to catch them is a grasshopper under a bobber shallow or a gob of mayflies on a hook shallow.

You can catch them on top with a fly rod

Had this same experience on Lewisville one Summer. Netted a few grasshoppers floating on the water and landed a bunch of blues 3-6 pound range. It was fun!

They will hit slow moving tiny torpedo's or use the clear water filled corks with a grasshopper look alike behind it. I have caught them on calm days on Twok in Aug. when the grass hoppers are there. You have to throw way in front of their wake to avoid spooking them and work the bait slow.
