Hey Folks. . .

I bought 5 new Shimano Sedona 1000 reels about 2 years ago. I really love the reels. They don't get as much use as I would like, and that is key, as they are not worn out. All reels are working properly, except for one. The bail does not spring back like it should when I start reeling. When I open the bail, sometimes it gets a bit caddywompus like the screws aren't tight. I don't know if the screws are too tight or too loose. I got a little screw driver after it, and the screws are snug. Not too tight or too loose. I tried tightening and loosening, but that didn't fix it.

Question. . . Is there a easy fix for this, or do I need to take it to a reel Doc. I know my explanation might be like calling the mechanic and telling him that the car goes Squeak, Squeak, and then expecting him to tell you what's wrong, but. . . I figured this might be a somewhat common problem.

Thanks for your help. . .

I have not had that particular spinning reel apart. The ones I have had apart had a round spring under the bail. If the screw gets loose, the spring becomes disengaged from the bail. You have to take the screw out, open the bail, put the spring back in the little hole in the bail and replace the screw. You should be able to see what's wrong after you take the screw out and look behind the bail.

You want to close the bail manually. Helps eliminate line twist and loose line on the spool. Never reel while a fish is pulling drag..tighten the drag or let the fish run.

Got it fixed. Thanks for the help. Thanks for the tips Gamblinman. I learned the tip about the drag early on when I was getting such bad line twist with mono. now I use braid, but I make sure my drag is tight. Didn't think about manually closing the bail. makes sense.

Thanks folks.

The spring was was loose. I just needed to put things back right and put it back together. Fairly simple, but always scary taking something apart, and wondering whether I’ll be able to put it back properly.

Humm, that is good to know. I have several that way now, and just thought they were old. If that fixes the problem I am going to be upset as I have spent a lot of money buying new ones that work. haha. I guess you can never have too many reels!!!
