I am looking for help. For years I was a bank beater but on lake fork if you’re going to catch fish you’ve to go to deep water. I get bit on my Carolina rig but I very seldom get the fish stuck. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong? I would appreciate any advise I can get

Thanks
KKidd

How are you setting the hook when you get bit?

Should be a horizontal motion as opposed to a vertical hook set....makes a lot of difference

I’m setting it horizontally but for some reason I’m not getting the hook pulled through. Today I was fishing a 7” fluke rigged up on a 4/0 EWG hook. When rigging, I run the hook all the way through and slightly embed the point of the hook in the back.

What power rod are you using? What test and type of line?

I can't remember which pro it was but they swore by using a 2/0 j-style hook for all their c-rig stuff. That wouldn't work of course for your 7" fluke though. If you are using the EWG style check to see if it's the heavier flipping ewg or the lighter weight hook version. The heavier hook at thise depths and distance would be hard to sink in while the lighter weight ewg would/should stick em! And yes, like mentioned above use a vertical hook setting motion and reel while doing it! Are you using braid as main line? If you are using all mono then you have a ton of stretch as well.

I’m using a 7’3” heavy action rod with 30 lb braid and a 17lb fluorocarbon leader. I am using a heavy hook.

I fish the 7" fluke all the time on a C-rig.. Been doing it on Falcon for years. Best hook I have found is the Gamakatsu Offset EWG 5/0 thin wire.. (Stock # 58415) It is very sticky and light enough to not affect the bait too much, but strong enough to hold any fish with the drag set right.. You need a wide gap hook to give that big piece of plastic somewhere to go and not ball up inside the hook gap when you set the hook..

Least it works for me...

When you rig your fluke are you running the hook all the way through the bait and then barely burying the point in the back of the fluke or do you just texas rig it?

Correct. That actually is my definition of “Texas Rig”. I never leave the hook buried in the middle of the bait(worm, Senko, lizard, fluke....). I always bring the hook all the way thru and then skin hook the tip of the hook into the back of the bait. As mentioned above by James^^^ try a little bigger hook with that bait so the hook will be exposed on the hook set and the thinner wire will increase hookups over a thicker wired “Superline hook”. Reel in the slack and swing for the fences with a sweeping rod hook set. Sounds like you have pretty much the right set up: braid main line, EWG hook...

“Tex-pose” the hook and use a lighter wire hook, with everything else you’re using that should stick them.

My rule of thumb with the C-Rig: Feel the fish twice.

My hookup ratio is much higher when i can be patient enough to wait for the second 'tug' after the initial 'bump'

This will also keep you from swinging on perch or smaller fish that are just nipping at it.

Just my 2 cents!

Thanks to everyone that offered information. I will try a thin wire hook maybe that will make a difference.
