For the first time in nearly 3 years on a kayak, my heart was pounding for about 5 minutes today.

I decided to fish Ray Roberts today. I didn't go out all day. So, instead of going to my slip, I decided to put in about 2 miles north to be closer to a couple of points that I like to fish in the hot summer months.

I put in about 4:00 and it was hotter than Hades. About 5:30 I noticed a storm over the Celina/Prosper area so I checked the radar. The radar showed it moving south and that it was going to miss the lake. A few minutes later a few clouds rolled in, so I checked the radar again... still tracking south and it was now over Frisco/Plano.

It got darker yet and I thought "I need to get back to the ramp". I turned my yak toward the ramp that was about a half mile to the north and a cold wind hit my back. Yikes. A small storm cell popped up directly over the lake in matter 10 minutes. It went from dead calm to what felt like 30MPH winds. I was rounding a point to get into the ramp cove and my yak turned sideways.

I could not get it to track. It felt like the skeg and rudder was pulling the stern around. Before I knew it I was backward. I pulled the skeg and rudder and dragged the paddle to keep the rotation going. Once I was close to straight, I dragged the paddle the other side and dropped the rudder. By now the wind and waves were pushing me 6 MPH and the rudder and paddle were keeping me relatively straight. I let the wind push me past the point and I gently steered into the cove. Phew. I made it! I dropped the fins and pedaled to the ramp.

I'm not gonna lie. It scared me!

I hate when those squalls build almost overhead and sneak up on you.
I've found that it's best to head for the closest shoreline and hunker down, as they hit fierce and don't last that long.
Glad you made it in safely.

Just one more cast!

Same thing happened to me and a buddy when we got caught up in that storm we had a couple of weeks ago. 60-70mph winds tossed us around. We were lucky we wasnt in the middle of the lake.

I contemplated doing this but thought I could make it to the next cove before it got too bad. I was almost very wrong because the wind kicked up really hard as soon as I neared the point, so hard there was no turning back. I'm a bad judge for wind speed, but it was hard and constant... there was no way that I could have turned back. Next time I am much more likely to hunker down.

A valuable lesson learned for next time...

Glad you made it back safe. I had a similar time where I got caught about a mile from the launch once in roughly 40 mph winds. This wasn't a rogue storm just some fierce wind that kicked up. Waves hitting me in the face in my Pro Angler. Peddaled as hard as I could for about an hour before I got to a point I was out danger. Couldn't make one wrong move or I would've flipped. Had a hard time getting enough leg strength together to load the kayak.

Surprises suck but I learned I better prepare a s be ready for them.

Same thing happened to me last year on Roberts but I got dumped when the yak went sideways. Huge swells that shifted my weight over and there I went. I had my life jacket on and wasnt going to drown so I laughed and flopped around like a beached whale trying to get back on. Good times.

I intentionally paddled through a squaw many years ago. I always thought I could and tried it one day. Never again! I had waves breaking under my chin with a solid mass of water completely covering my kayak two feet deep. I was only a few hundred yards offshore of Port Everglades and a Towboat US dude was watching me from just outside the inlet. Guess he thought I could make it too or he could pick me up later as he left right before it hit. Only lasted less 10 minutes but I was pushed backwards about a quarter a mile across the shipping channel. Couldn't even see the bow of my kayak as I had sunscreen all in my eyes and I was trying to paddle and rinse face with salt water. Winds got so hard so fast I quit trying to make it to shore and just pointed bow into wind and tried to stay upright. When it was over I was completely lost as I couldn't believe I was a quarter mile north of where I had started and didn't recognize any of the beachfront hotels in that area.

Something about Ray Roberts and Texoma. Those two lakes seem to be notorious for pop up storms. Never happened to me in a yak, but have definitely had some pucker moments on a boat.

Thanks Janie, I will use 70MPH next time I tell the story. It makes it more interesting roflmao

I have no idea how fast the winds were on the lake and this was a minor "pucker moment" compared to some of the offshore guys and gals. All I know is I had very little influence over the situation and almost found myself blown well past the ramp. Lesson learned!
