Ive got a pretty good catcher but hes only 7 going on 8 in August. He plays better then a lot of 9s around here. But hes struggling with the throw to second. I know in baseball you have a arm or you dont . But at what age is the cut off? He can one hop it but thats not a rope throw its a little arch. Its dead on. Hes only 52lbs. Hes a small kid he will get his size around 13-14 like I I did. We play as a triple a team. Played 7 tourneys lots with 8s and a few teams had 9s on them. Still got second 3 times, first 3 times. And this is his first spring ever playing. I just dont want to spend a lot of time on it if he wont ever be able to make the throw fast enough. Hes very solid defense also. Plays second when were playing pool play or goofing off. Thing that bothers me most is he throws hard as heck somedays not at all not sure if its a will thing or a sore arm thing.

Hes young, he will get stronger. Real question is, does he enjoy playing?

It's all about the proper footwork to generate the power to get off a good throw. Has someone who knows the proper techniques worked with him?

I wouldnt worry about it too much at that age. When the time comes, make sure he snaps it from his ear and doesnt wind up like an outfielder throwing home. Also, a one hop isnt a bad thing throwing to second base if its done right and consistently.

Hes young, he will get stronger. Real question is, does he enjoy playing? This, ^^^^^ If he is truly all in, like you don't have to urge him to practice, he bugs you constantly to go outside and work with him, and you don't have to wake him up on game day, there are some exercises for building that arm up. My kid was a catcher and utility at age 8, he was 65lbs plus then, and he still catches mostly and plays centerfield and pitches some in HS and Utrip. I urge you to watch his attitude and mannerisms, as you don't want to burn him out. When they get older and change base lengths, you will be asking this again.

He loves it. He has never once complained about anything. He actually gets mad and yells at me when the other kids start dropping balls. Ive had him with a catcher coach but he moved away in March. Been trying to find another. I still speak with him. He helps me with him. But its not the same as him being there. We throw from the ear but coach said lets try long arm till he gets the strength. I know he gets down on himself when he doesnt hit second base. Im trying to encourage him, he doesnt like failure. We played 7 games in one day he stayed behind the plate all day. He is tough and a hard worker never complained. Just stayed focused

We are 8u AA, going into 9u next tournament. Our coach is one of D-Bat's top rated instructors nationwide. He is constantly reminding some of the parents who are expecting a little too much from their kids that most of the team is 7yr. olds,, and it impossible to gauge the true potential at that age. We are a very fundamentally sound team and I assure you his arm will get ALOT stronger probably quicker than you think. My Son is a lefty so he is pretty much relegated to first, pitch and outfield. His arm is a live wire right now but I fully expect the competition to catch up velocity wise so we spend a lot of time working on location just to stay ahead of the game. IF your son is serious about catching check out Rocker B Ranch. Their website is www.rockerb.com and they offer a catching clinic that is not cheap but in this case you get your moneys worth. Their facilities are second to none as well.

Pondfish no one is upset here. Yes hes only 7. However instruction is 70$ - 80 a hour. It a lot of people want to spend that once a week to find out he wont ever be strong enough. Some kid develop early some late. Im just trying to find out the normal time you know.
Billdance. I actually seen that ranch before , but says 9and up. I was gonna goto a Jersey one with him its a 9 also but I sent a few videos and they said I could bring him. Im trying to figure out the situation now. Thats along ways away. But theres not a lot of specific camps for catcher around.

Whatever you spend on baseball, put the same amount in a savings account for his college. In the end, that is what you and him will need way more than lessons. Take it from someone who had the prodigy son. Pitched one year in college and blew out his arm. Could have easily put him through college for what we spent over the years on baseball. SMDH!

You will find out in the long run that politics will determine your sons skill level.

You will find out in the long run that politics will determine your sons skill level. Sad but true to an extent. The reason we were forced to go to a travel team is lack of competition locally. We were playing at best four inning games before the run rule took effect. We would practice 2-3 hours a week and play maybe 30 minutes of game until it was called.
