The recent article about Long has me wondering how much input he really had on his signature rods. The 784 is an incredibly good jig rod. It is great casting or pitching, and also great with plastics.
The 795 is perfect for "medium" swimbaits. I also use it for Magnum stickbaits, large plastics and even crankbaits.

I spoke with Gary briefly at the BASS Classic in Shreveport several years back. IF memory serves me correctly, he was a little surprised about the success of the 784.

Anyway, curious if someone has some insight into who actually had the idea for the design of these rods. If it was Long, then at least he did something right, lol.

Im gonna go out on a limb here and say that there will never be any rod that Gary releases than doesnt have his input in the design. Maybe the name was put on it to help with marketing, unknowing the ML guy was a fraud. I looked online yesterday and didn't see any models with that particular name on it. what a shame. that ML guy fooled a lot of people for a long time. Gary is the type of guy that will give you the shirt off his back until you wrong him.... and that's one gigantic guy that I wouldn't want to wrong. Gary spends a LOT of time overseas with the factory designing, bending, pulling, balancing the rods. I am quite sure ML didn't have any input in the design other than what he wanted in length and action. maybe he used a prototype and said he liked it??? only they know. this is purely my speculation on it.

The current 7'8" jig rod is marked DX 784c. Originally it was marked 784c ML, I believe (I am not around my rods right now). It was marketed as the Mike Long jig rod.

The one time I spoke with Gary for a few minutes he left a good impression on me. Really nice guy.

I have done business with Gary many times and he's a really solid dude...as good as they come. It's too bad Long put him in a bad light as he did so many others but I'm sure Gary will make the appropriate adjustments and move on. Anyone who wants to meet one of the really good guys should call him and then make the trip to his new facility.

I think the 784 is one of the best rods ever made, I noticed when the XP series came out that the ML was no longer stamped on the rods. Makes me wonder if Gary wasn't starting to believe some of the stuff going around.

If you want one with ML on it, you better hurry up and snag one before theyre all gone.
