I’m trying to estimate the weight of a gar I caught. I thought a formula had been posted but I couldn’t find it. The gar was 78” long / 30” girth. How much would it weigh?
(30x30) x 78 , (900) x 78 = 70,200 , 70,200 Divided by 800 = 87.75 -------------- 800
There are others that have tried different formula's over the last few years. Research shows if one uses 790 instead of 800 , it was 99.95% accurate. If this is the case the gar may have weighed 88.860# I made contact with TPWD to see what they feel is the most accurate formula. A reply may take a while. Respectfully, Ed

I used that formula and used fish swami for gar. Fish swami said 175. It seems like a bigger fish than 90. In your experience, how accurate is the formula above for alligator gar?

In my experience the formula above (and others like it) is worthless. If we use this formula for my dad's PB Carp of 34lb 4oz we don't even get close. 25.5 x 25.5 x 36 = 29.26. 5lbs is a world of difference. IMO if you're wanting accurate weights (and releasing your fish) it's best to invest in a scale good enough to certify with TPWD. I use Reuben Heatons made specifically for Carp.

Chad Ferguson designed one of the best scales I have seen on the market. Weighs up to 110 pounds. Is certifiable it is so accurate. All for $40. No more guessing on fish under 110 pounds. I shot one that was 6'4'' from lake amistad and it was 154 pounds which is close to its length.
I found this.........What do you think? Doing this gar formula, the above gar would have an estimated weight of 175.76 # I've never seen nor known of so many different formula's for different species of Fish.

I’m not saying it’s not a good fish at all !!just seams a little skinny to me. I’m no stranger to gar . They are my go to fish is all sorry if I sounded like an a—hope!
Checked it with a scale a number of times, i use it, kirk kirkland used it and i got it from him, chris moody uses it. Been +/-10 pounds every time i have checked it with a scale. Within 5 or 10 pounds one way or another on 100 to 200 pound fish is good enough for me.
If i was messing with igfa records or such i would consider a scale able to weight them but for my everyday trips its really just too much extra to fool with and its easier on the fish too.
