Took a long weekend trip up north after all the downers lately - my dad had emergency surgery, I had two family funerals, and four long-time employees and contractors passed away all in the past four months. Fortunately, my dad is recovering well. Saturday June 15th was opening day. Caught loads of undersize kings, and finally had a hookup with a biggun. After runs of over 100 yards, I got it to boatside, grabbed the gaff and could SEE part of the fish's back - bigger than any king I've ever landed. And then it spit the hook. Sunday I went out, had only one hit in three hours, but it was worth it.

Right trip at the Right time. Glad you were able to hook into and catch some Kings. The fight alone makes the trip worth it. Awesome post and a super fish. Thanks for sharing. Side Note: Sorry for the loss of your employees and contractors. Prayers up for their families and friends. Glad your Dad made it through hart surgery and is doing well. Praying for a continued good recovery. The Lord Jesus Christ has control .

Just got back yesterday from a coho fishing trip in Washington and had smoked salmon for lunch. Didn't catch anything as big as your king. Alaska fishing is still on my to do list. Hope the trip helped you unwind a little.

Best time for relaxing and having some personal time is on the water catching some fish. Glad you got the time to do that. Awesome fish.

My wife is from the Seattle area. She is the biggest salmon snob. And wild caught Pacific Northwest or Alaskan Salmon is really all she likes - anything farm raised and she starts to dry heave.
When she was younger, a lot of "the boys" would work on fishing boats for summer jobs and bring home fresh fish. On top of her logging "friends" being great hunters who would always have a fresh supply of venison. Hard to satisfy her with Texas meat in more ways than one.
I'm ready to go Zeke - only to show her I can satisfy her cravings and because, well, it is pretty beautiful up there, and it is fishing.

Nice. I just got to Alaska a few hours ago Whereabouts are you fishing? We did 1 day out of Homer on a friends boat and loaded up with Halibut and caught a few cod. We stayed with a different friend in Soldotna and fished the Russina River for Sockeye a few days (Limit is 9 per day this year). Our trip up for kings on the Nushagak feel through last minute so we fished the Kasilof instead. I think I have about 40lbs of Salmon fillets and 25lbs of Halibut fillets being sent back!

Awesome catch! All salmon are super fun to catch. I usually travel to Soldotna and fish the Bings, Kasilof and Kenai. Here is a pic of my biggest King to date!
