I bought an old Triton TR21 with the carbed Evinrude 225 this spring. Ran good from the start but leaked fuel at the VRO pump. Bought a new pump on Ebay which leaked in the same place at the top between the oil and fuel chamber. The seller sent a second pump to replace the first and it leaks in the same place. Obvious dripping when I squeeze the ball. The seller refunded my money and let me keep the pumps. (knockoffs?) I need some advise...another new pump from a reputable dealer can cost $450-600, could I count on it being a better pump? To convert to a non VRO pump $250. An electric pump doesn't seem to be recommended. Anyone ever fix this type of leak? Any help will be appreciated!

I converted my Johnson 150 from the VRO to the dual fuel pump option. I miss not having to mix oil in the gas but its really no big deal and the motor runs great. Those 550.00 plus VRO pumps suck when you have to replace them. Mine went out twice in 10 years so when it came to the third one I decided to go with the option. I know you hear it both ways, Stay with the VRO and Dont.. I read about it for a long time. Wish I would have did it the first time the VRO pump failed!

Update... The good news and the bad. The good news goes like this: The last new ebay pump that I installed leaked badly at first but after setting a few days it didn't leak at all????. I guess the seals may have been dry?. With the leak cured I was off to the lake to try it out. The bad news: the boat won't plane out before running out of gas and wont keep running without squeezing the ball 6 times every minute or two. It sounds good and has power as long at it has gas. I have replaced the fuel line from the tank, squeeze ball, fuel pump, pulse limiter, and removed the gas cap to eliminate vent problems. Any Ideas?

I'd guess the fuel system is clogged somewhere. Were your OLD fuel lies Black? The older lines have that thin plastic liner inside and over time they crystallized into very small pieces . I think ethanol is a cause also. My new lines are the Gray type.

I replaced the old black line with a new automotive (black) 3/8 ethanol safe line and a new gray squeeze ball line to the pump. I think I have found a good used pump to try and if that doesn't work I will try to look at the fuel pickup in the tank.

If the pump is working.... and the line is clogged between the bulb and tank the bulb will collapse. If the bulb gets soft after you pump it up firm with out the motor running and the fuel runs back into the tank you got a air leak. My bulb would get soft and the gas would run back and the motor would die out. I think you still have a pump issue.

I had a Johnson 120HP VRO motor several years ago ran good and the VRO fuel pump quit. I put a non-VRO pump on it, never had a hitch. Just had to remember to oil the gas when I put it in. I ran it several years with the non-VRO fuel pump.

Fixed....Last week I bought a used VRO pump on ebay to replace the new one that didn't work. Great day it worked like it should, lots of power, planes out nicely. Bonus....caught a 4.5lb large mouth.
