I have an older 70 lb 24 V Minn Kota trolling motor that has 4 wires coming off of it .. 2 red, 2 black. I want to put a plug on the end of these wires. I have a brand new plug and outlet that is for 2 or 3 wires (Marinco 70AMP). I hate to have to buy another that is specifically for 4 wires if I don't have too. My question...is there any problem if I just use 2 of the wires coming off the motor into the plug? Batteries are connected in series. Thanks, Joe.

That is probably going to be a 12/24 v setup. I had the same thing. You have to go back to your batteries and see how they are connected to be sure. You would eliminate the 12v wire and just use the 24v. Problem is on an older setup, the wire is probably not a hvy enough gauge to properly run the new 24v TM and you probably don't have the proper fuse either. I ran new wire from the batteries to the fuse and then the fuse to the trolling motor plug. Really easy to do.

Thanks for the reply. I will be using the same exact set up as I have been for many years. The only change I want to make is to put a plug on the end of this old Riptide Motor which has 4 wires. Can I just use 1 of the red and 1 of the black coming off the motor and put that into a plug made for 2 wires? I have a brand new 2 wire plug and receptacle and would hate to have to drop another 75 bucks for a 4 wire if its not necessary. When you say the wire may not handle it...do you mean the wires coming off the trolling motor or the wires coming up from the batteries to the plug outlet? In a nutshell I want to take 1 pos and 1 neg from the trolling motor and connect it to an outlet that has 1 pos and 1 neg. Thanks, Joe.

From the battery to the outlet. Mine were not a heavy enough gauge. Check the wires coming off of the battery as to how they are attached. If it had 4 wires then one wire is probably coming straight from 1 battery which allowed you to select 12v and the other is wired off the battery in a 24v connection. Some of the older TMs could be switched from 12 to 24. There is no reason to buy another plug and receptacle. I'd be sure to get the fuse that will look like this

between the battery and the outlet. As long as the POS and NEG are coming off of the batteries ran in Parallel you will be fine.
