I took Randy Wood's advice and got a 7 foot throw net. For those of you still using a 5 or six foot net you need to trade up. The performance of the net was amazing considering I only added a couple feet but that makes the difference in trying to get shad in medium water like 7-10 feet.

The main downside of these bigger nets is you need a different technique to throw them. After trying the same technique I used with my smaller net and getting nowhere, I went on Youtube while on the lake and found this good video. Using this technique produces a fully open net every time for me. First time I tried this I got a net full of shad, a huge carp and a catfish ( not good).

Yesterday I went out in mid afternoon, marked shad in 10 feet of water and got more 5-7 inch threadfins than I could use in a couple throws. I'm sure the Chocolate milk color of PK helps some as tehy cannot see the net coming. I'll be interested in seeing if this works as well once the lake clears up.

This is how I throw mine and its a heavy 7 foot. 1 1/2 pounds a foot.
Huge difference between a cheap light weight net and a quality heavy one.
This method also works great on big nets 8-12 feet.

Whaler: I've seen that technique before and tried it with mixed results. It really depends on releasing the part of the net you are holding at the right time. Works really good based on the videos I have seen and would probably be the way to go with a very heavy net.

Thanks for posting! I will have to try that. I learned what I call the triple method....I load a third of the net over my left shoulder, third in my right hand, and a third dangling free and throw it. I got it down but takes a little bit to load the net and get ready to throw it plus I learned the hard way that cast net and shirts with buttons dont mix with this method lol!. Im curious to try a few other methods as in the video.

Is the method where you half it and hold it in your mouth a lost art? I been doing it that way for years.

Some may put it in their mouth but I dont.

If you watch this video about 5 times you will eventually notice its about a casting net and she is teaching you how to throw it....but hard to pay attention to the net roflmao

I'm not a fan of putting any portion of a castnet in my mouth, and I surely don't want a wet shirt on when running across a lake even when the weather isn't cold.
I throw my net like the OP demonstrated in the video! thumb

Just one more cast!

I throw it that way between 25 and 150 times a week.
