Like many of you I am bothered by the number of our brothers who drown while yakking and are not wearing their PFD.

I suggest we start PFD shaming...anyone not wearing a PFD we should give the riot act to. Who is in?

It's a personal choice, like wearing a helmet on a motorcycle. One should always wear it, but wearing it should not be mandated by law. While I always wear my PFD in the yak or the SoloSkiff (or in the poling skiff, too), I think that there are times that it's okay to take it off. Like paddling a shallow flat, or a waist-deep creek.

Some people will always exercise poor judgement. That's life. But I don't believe it's our job to make everyone conform to our personal standards.

I agree with Mr. Ford on this one, and I know it sounds harsh and one person lost is too many, but if you realize how many people are into kayaking the number of reported incidents is very small considering the bigger picture by taking other factors into account.
We just don't need more laws to protect us against ourselves because we will always find a way.

Just one more cast!

One windy day, I was kayak fishing Lighthouse Lakes, and a couple came by in a tandem kayak, and I asked the lady if she liked the guy she was with, and she said, "Sure". Then I asked her why she didn't make him, and herself, wear PFD's? No comment. That's all you can do. Until there's a LAW, people will not use their head, and wear PFD's all the time. If there's a LAW, some people STILL won't wear them. IslandJim

PFD shaming is just as stupid as helmet shaming.

Mind your own business.

If people want to take the chance, it's their choice, not yours.

Who cares if you're tired if seeing news articles about it?

That said, I always wear my PFD and my helmet.

It's my choice.

So youre a maybe on PFD shaming?

Its ok to shame smokers, fat people, people who don't wear seatbelts, drunk drivers Etc why can't we shame people who don't wear their PFD?

Not sure why I'm responding since I don't shame people, because it's not OK. If you feel the need to shame people then shame those who don't wear seat belts and drive drunk, since those are illegal. There's nothing illegal about smoking, being overweight,or not wearing a PFD.

What about those whose business it is to find your dead body, bring it to your family then gets to go home and try to play with their kids as if nothing happened. It maybe your choice but to choose to make a person,,,and their family have to suffer through that is plain selfish. I dont care what people choose to do when it only affects them but when their bad choice affects others its wrong, legal or not.

Yes I think not wearing a pfd or helmet is stupid as it gets but why can't people just mind their own business and worry about themselves?

If everyone could there would be no one to drag your dead body back to your family

Do any of the shaming advocates smoke? If so, the odds of cancer affecting your family, the medical staff who treat you and all of our insurance rates are very real (and much higher that drowning). However, smoking is legal and you are well within your rights to make your own decision.

Awareness works, but shaming does not... and calling out a couple minding their own business might get you a broken nose (or a "keyed" truck).

I really appreciate the concern and the ongoing PFD discussion is helpful. However, assembling a posse to bully folks does not feel like a productive solution to me.

Great topic and demeanor Dan. I bet by shaming you mean just saying something about it, not being a total a hole about it, and certainly you didn't suggest a law. To some's example, I smoked, so I have absolutely no problem, with sort of banter, "shaming" someone. In fact, I believe, on this, and many other hunting and fishing as well as societal issues, if we don't, again in hopefully a cool way, shame, bad, inappropriate, dangers, whatever one wants to call it, behavior, we will force laws into effect. For example, I big time "shame" my buddies when I'm fishing with them in their boats, and they roar by kayakers. They just don't know any better and so do those not wearing their jackets on yaks.

I don't really follow the kayaking world much anymore, broke down and got a boat for the kids, but I know at one time kayak fishing influencers on TV and magazines were making a stand on not posting a pictures without the yakers wearing kayaks. I am even trying, hard to break the feeling my granddad or someone is going to think I'm a dork, wear my life jacket when running my boat and at least when I don't have another qualified boat driver on board. I remember when seatbelts became law and everybody acted like it was some big deal. Wearing a life jacket on a kayak just isn't, they should be doing it.

Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after. Henry David Thoreau
