My buddy and I headed out to the local river to hit up a spot he found for crappie. There was a weird algae spawn situation going on. The water was extremely green, with low visibility. Then the river authorities started letting water out of the bottom of the dam, so things got murky really fast. Our fault completely, should have looked at the dam schedule.

Ended up having a blast, regardless. Caught a bunch of gar and some gaspergou (freshwater drum) on a beetle spin. I really do think that lure is fantastic. Costs $0.79, and will catch literally anything.

Check out the video, if you're into that sort of thing. I'm always looking for feedback on how I can improve my editing and shooting.

Thanks!

Nice fish! Cool video, too. Never understood how people can simultaneously appreciate the fish for its hard fighting capabilities yet label it "trash." Drum are natives and are one of just a few fish helping with our zebra mussel invasion.

I love fighting them, and they arent exactly trash fish. I think I ended up changing topics as soon as I said that on video (I get distracted easily). I think they fall somewhere between carp and bass for me. Its just disappointing when you think youre fighting an 8 pound bass and it ends up being a 6 pound drum. Nevertheless, a fish is a fish, and I shouldnt complain. Glad you liked the video!

I can understand the feeling, I'm slightly disappointed anytime I catch a catfish while targeting carp but any tug on the line is a good one! Catfish have saved me from skunking many a time fish

Agreed - I love landing channel cats as a "bycatch" when carp'ing. Bullheads on the other hand... ARGH (but they are still light years more acceptable than pesky turtles!).
