You can Frankenstein just about whatever you want.

I want to put either a 4bt or a cummins 2.8 in my grandpas old 89 chevy for my son's first vehicle only 12 more years to wait.

I meant the 2010 to 2013 rams.

Those year models, I would go Cummins 100%. The only weak spot in the Rams are the Transmissions, and that only factors in if you program them, they can't handle real high HP.

The 2011 and 2012 6.7 powerstrokes are good but they have problems with the ceramic ball bearings in the Turbos. that said they are solid trucks.

I wouldn't touch a Duramax. The people they sell them to must have never driven a Ford or Dodge before buying a Duramax.

I drive a 17' 6.7 liter Ford and I love it. I have converted a few Cummins owners to switch to a Powerstroke and I have been told that pulling really heavy loads, the Ford Outperforms the Cummins. I went with a Powerstroke because in that year model the Ford had 100 hp more, which I don't need but its fun to drive.

In the year models you listed Cummins all the way. they are damn fine trucks and will serve you well.

I totally disagree. I/my business own(s) a small fleet of diesel pickups/trucks from 3/4 ton up to 2.5 ton. My personal preference is my 2015 GMC Sierra 2500HD Denali. I bought a 2016 Ford F-250 King Ranch in 2017 and was going to pass my 2015 GMC down to be a company vehicle but I quite honestly missed the hell out of it after putting about 15,000 miles on the Ford. So my dad drives the Ford now instead. We regularly haul right at GCWR(24,500lbs for the GMC and 23,500 for the Ford) from Midland up to the Panhandle and I typically get 3.5mpg better fuel mileage than he does loaded and about 6 mpg better empty. The Magnetic Ride Control on my GMC makes the ride so much smoother than the Fords. The Allison transmission is the best available. We have a 2017 Ford F-250 that I call my biggest mistake ever. The thing has been in the shop 3 times and still has a death wobble from hell. Two dealers have now told me "These superduty trucks aren't made to go over 65mph, that's why you experience the wobble at 70+". If I pay $60k for something I expect a little better than that. I've had everything from a 99 F-250 up to a 2016 F-650 and 2003 Dodge RAM 1500's up to 2017 RAM 5500's.... and I still prefer a GMC/Chevy.
