A new crappie tournament trail has started called Pro Crappie Trail. This is a series with a new format similar to some of the bass tournament series like MLF. This initial event was limited to 15 teams to determine interest and tweak any problem areas. This event Sat, June 1, on Lake Fork was a grand success based on what the participants had to say. The format consisted of 3 fishing periods of 2 hrs, 15 min. The west arm of Fork was divided into 3 zones and 5 teams were assigned to each zone for each period. Teams weighed in 5 fish each period, then were assigned a different zone to fish the next period. The teams were allowed 45 minutes between periods to get back to the scales to weigh, take a break and get back to the next assigned fishing zone. Each group of 5 teams left the start point at 10 minute intervals. Each team was accompanied by a marshal and marshals changed boats every period. This was a one pole artificial only tournament. As the events unfolded during the day, live coverage was posted on the Pro Crappie Trail Facebook page, with pics and some video.
As a marshal, I can definitely say the contestants were excited to have this format. With three weigh in periods, the excitement builds through out the day. Each team knows where they stand at the end of the first two periods and what they have to catch to move up the leader board. Of course the first task is put five keeper fish in the boat and then start to upgrade. Two hours and 15 minutes is not as long as you might think when the pressure is on.

Yes, fish are released, except for those that can't make it. Fish have to be alive for weigh in. The scales were set up about 50 ft from the water where the boats docked for weigh in.

This tournament and format was an absolute blast! I am looking forward to future tournaments. The most important aspect to me was the single pole and single jig only. I think the future of tournaments for crappie fishing will go this direction. Special thanks to Jerry Hancock and Brad Williams for putting this together. An extra special thanks to the people who volunteered their time to be marshals! (Thanks Ken!)

I will have to check this out. Just registered on CAT to start doing these, so this sounds pretty interesting. thanks for the info! One more question, is this just Texas? Not wanting to travel too much as I do that anyway for work. LOL.

These tournaments will be NE Texas, possibly Millwood also.
Josh Jones fished as individual.
Hey Slew, it was fun. Definitely a different feel to it. The enthusiasm/interest level stays peaked all day.

Ken, I googled this and couldn't find much. Where can you find more information such as tournament schedule, qualifiers, rules, etc?

All the info is on the Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Pro-Crappie-Trail-354230298551622/The rules aren't published and the schedule hasn't been set. This was a kickoff event to see how this format worked. Jerry Hancock and Brad Williams put this event together and own Pro Crappie Trail. I'm sure they are making a few tweaks and will have more info in the coming weeks. The plan as related to me is to make this an individual tournament series. Entry for the team event was $300. Entry for an individual event hasn't been determined, but will be around the $200 mark. That is fluid and just me talking based on thoughts before this tournament. Jerry and Brad are getting plenty of feedback from the participants and gauging interest. Those that are interested can go to the FB page and offer your comments.

They were not weighed on the boat. They were brought to the scales that we had set up close to the water. Once they were weighed they were released. We had minimal loss of fish.

Our plans for this trail is to be an individual angler , single pole and artificial only format. With the new technology this format should be exciting! We were very excited with the postive feedback.
