Hey guys!

Quick question. Do bluegill move into tributary creeks like white bass and crappie do? Thinking about taking my nephew fishing. The creek near me in North Dallas, which is attached to a large lake, always gets a white bass run in the spring and crappie in the winter. Do bluegills and other sunfish move in large numbers to the creeks as well?

Thanks!

Bluegill can be found year around in all water bodies. They will change patterns during the fall, winter, and spring cycles. A lot of times they will move to shallower water to either spawn or feed. During the hot days of summer they will usually move to deeper water and stay under structure such as docks, sunken timbers, and overhanging tree limbs. Bridge pillars, brush piles ,and edges of drop offs are good summer time spots to catch Bluegill. Right now you can find them in shallow water on nest. Also fish shaded areas and under over hanging tree limbs. Good luck and let us know how you do. thumb

Side Note: Reed beds, and grass beds also hold good numbers of fish during the summer months. hooked

They are more likely to stay in the lake or stay in the creek year round. While you will have some of the bigger sunfish that will stay around the mouth of a creek or river in a reservoir, it is not my experience that sunfish will make a run deep into creeks or out into the lake. Typically they only travel as far as they have to from spawning flats, summer shelves and winter holes.

Definitely a good idea to take your nephew to a creek if you can. This time of year, there will be multiple species of sunfish and lots of other fish too. The further into the creek you trek, the further upstream, the more of an adventure it typically is. The more fish species and other wildlife you are more likely to come across. It also seems the further upstream you go, the more remote the creek seems to be. Just my experience. I saw a small herd (is herd the right term here?) of whitetail deer crash down from a steep bank down into creek and cross it onto a tall, grassy bank. It was a very cool site. I’ve also seen feral hogs do something similar. Still cool, but just reminded me to take a few more down in the upcoming hunt.

I made a game of it with my oldest back in the day. See how many fish we could catch of of one bait or lure and see how many species we could catch on one lure. We caught 8 species off of two identical Tiny Lucky 13’s once! It was a very cool day and lasting memories.

Been following this section for years and I can honestly say that the anglers who post here catch more than their fair share of Bluegill fishing the creeks year around.
