Just got back from Bolivar, or should i say Seaweed Texas. The Sargassum is getting bad in the gulf. Took the kayak and camper down for 4 nights. Trip was really peaceful with the absence of mosquitoes. Lack of surf fishing success was nulled by crashing waves, Texas sunrises, and cold beverages.
Tides were coming in till noon then outgoing
Friday evening I was able to catch some nice mullet in the surf in the shallows after wave breaks.
Saturday - I walked cut mullet ( could not catch any mullet in net in am) out the following morning and the sargassum would overtake the line and the hooks within 10- 15 minutes. After multiple attempts I finally gave up. Waves were crashing over my head on the second sandbar, so no kayak action. Took my kid to the north jetties were people were catching crabs using chicken and nets. We used dead shrimp and caught croaker one after another. 6 year old had a blast. One guy was reeling in a giant black drum as we left.
Sunday - I took the yak into rollover bay. Using fresh shrimp I caught a mixed bag of stuff from the canal to some random rocks. Keeper red, sheepshead, catfish, croaker and a small ray. Set back on coast side, and let kid splash around. Tried dead shrimp on small rod in first gut and seaweed would even over take that rod within minutes. Able to catch some more mullet in the evening throwing from ankle deep.
Monday - Destined for more punishment, I ran cut mullet out, with same results. Sargassum would over take the rig within 5-10 minutes. Towards the end of the day, I stayed with the line half way out and took the seaweed off as it got on the line. This yielded 3 foot of seaweed and a catfish....success..sorta...
Will return later in year for revenge.
Edited - Also, I did try to deploy one crab trap in surf. Seaweed within 30 minurtes had over taken this, causing it to tumble and wash up on shore.
