I am new to Salt Water fishing and want to do more, I have an Ocean Prowler Kayak and a couple of spinning rods and reels outfitted with 15-pound braid, have watched some youtube clips and have an anchor with 8-foot of chain. Needing further advice on equipment will be doing DIY on Gaf, lighting and other required projects while saving to buy proper spinning rods and reels.

Anything that is legal and will bite, really not wanting a 20-foot great white though. Looking for great table fare.

Lots of stuff inshore with the rods and reels you have. Flounder, slot reds, sheephead among others. As far as gear goes, pfd, after the story i just read...a flag, paddle experiance, not sure how much you have but i can promise thi gs change fast in the salt. If your looking to get offshore find a buddy to go with and get a vhf radio, reels around 5500 or 6000 size with 30lb braid work i like 20-40 or 30-60 class rods. Be ready for long distances. When we go to the coast we average 15-20+ miles a day.

Welcome to the forum! As far as equipment in addition to your PFD you'll need a whistle and a 360 light if you're going to be on the water before dawn or after dusk. I did a dyi 360 light that worked well for me for a while. See video link below for that where I got the idea. You'll need a stringer, cooler or fish bag to keep the fish. Stringers work fine for most in the bay. I always carry a towel with me and a sponge to help wash out mud and fish slime. Paddle leash- don't forget this. If you want to leash your rods you can. Lots of carabiner type clips and pad eyes on your kayak to leash things to. There's a lot of other stuff- small drink cooler, crate, stake out pole, tackle storage, fish grips, dip net, pliers, lures, etc. but that all depends on your style of fishing. Best to get out there and fish a couple of times before you buy a lot of stuff you don't need. Less is the best. Don't overload your kayak with a lot of stuff you don't need.

Here is something that is coming up soon.
There is a lot of experienced kayakers attending and I'm sure some noobs as well. Get a VHF radio, plenty of water, and be safe!
This is a good opportunity to talk to and learn from some highly experienced BTB (beyond the breakers) kayakers, and learn from the best.
Even if you choose to not go all the way to the standpipe, but just fish past the breakers, it's a good place to meet and learn and pick their brains.

For VHF I recommend standard horizon HX300 or icom M25 for an introductory model.
I have the HX300 b/c it is a bit cheaper than the icom M25 (HX300 has rebates). But icom M25 has a smaller profile and would actually be more convenient.

Gaf is good to have when fishing BTB for king or cobia. For inshore, a net will be enough and necessary.

For anchor, I use a 5lb or 8lb mushroom anchor with anchor trolley system. I found no chain is needed in inshore. I have used other types of anchor but settled with mushroom type for it's versatility.

Fish safe and tight lines!

clap

Be careful using sunscreen and handling anything fishing related. Personally i prefer to cover up with long sleeves and pants with a giant sombrero type hat, no sun screen. It will surely kill any chances of hooking up.

Christian, that may explain why I don't catch much fish generally.

Prof. Salt uses sunscreen cream, I use the aerosol. I get great protection, what is the difference?
