is 30 lb trilene big game too heavy for white bass or should it only be used for hybrids or striped bass I am curious because I have some rsr lures I bought and I don't want to go too small and break them off and risk losing them so easy because they are expensive and because 30 lb test is all I got now besides the 6 lb test on my crappie poles .

Usually, fishing method determines the line requirements. For 1 oz slabs and big spoons, 30 lbs test line could be OK. For finesse techniques like drop shot, split shot, jig heads, Tx, small spoons, 6-12 lbs would be fine. Thick lines will restrict casting and actions.

If I am fishing a rig with a lure and a jig, I always follow the sage advise of Lakeguide and use 30# line between the two lures. If you hook two fish and one is a big one, it saves the lure. If you are fishing Tawakoni, use 40# or 50# between the lures because you need to be prepared for two big ones. If you are using one lure, then the drag on your reel is the tool that saves the lure, not the line strength. It never hurts to go with what you have. Just go. In the future I would change to something in the 10# to 20# range. Based on your comments about not wanting to buy new line I would assume you will be fishing from the shore. The heavier line may help you to straighten hooks and not lose the lure. It may be perfect for your fishing style. Good luck and tight lines.

I use 8lb on my spinning gear and 12-15 on my bait casts (flouro).I use 20 on my live bait abu set ups. Thousands of fish a year and I can�t remember the last time I had a customer break off. Set your drag right and fight the fish. I re spool every other month and more in the busy season (just the 8lb) That�s the trade off. You will spend more on line but the cast ability, amount of line you can out on the reel, and then the sensitivity is best. Unless your fishing white bass with a shark rod what can you really spool up with 30lb anyway? You should be using light tackle on hire bass. If you snag a hybrid just adjust your drag and tire him out.

I was fishing with my wife for whites some years ago on Lake Livingston. We were on a main lake point and onto some sandies down on the bottom in about 15 flow. To my amazement she was catching two to my one. We were using identical rigs pulling #2 Mepps up from the botton. There had been a drought that year and the water was unusually clear. I kept throwing right where she was, but she would get one every cast and I about every third one. No one outfishes me with a Mepps. So, I looked more closely at her reel and mine. Her reel had 10lb mono on it and mine had 20 lb. I switched with her and I caught them every cast. The learning is that in clearer water, the line thickness/visibility can make a difference.

All I can say is I�m glad I use �overkill� for fishing....I use 30 pound braid which is excessive but just yesterday we were out white bass/hybrid fishing and hooked into a 38 pound flathead which my guests were able to successfully land, photograph, and release..... a memory they and myself will always cherish ontop of all the other fish we caught

30 is way overkill for even striper and hybrids. 10-12 is about the most you need for hybrids and striper, is say 6-8 for sandies. But I use 6-8 on the main lake, no need for anything more, set your drag and you�ll be fine. I landed 8 striper and/or hybrids, several of which were 8-10 lbs this weekend on 4 lb line in current. Set your drag and you�ll be fine, most sandies aren�t over a lb.

It should be added that I don�t even use 30lb mono on my flathead rods. 12-15 lb main line is all I use and I�ve had fish well in excess of 40lbs landed with zero issues. Hell, 30 lb mono is probably enough to use a lot of offshore fishing. Use the lightest line you can get away with. On the other hand I don�t have a lure in my tackle box that runs over $1, so I don�t mind losing a few fish here and there. Im also a firm believer that the line type and size is probably the most important thing in fishing and the lure choice is secondary. Just my 2 cents.

I like to use 20 in freshwater most of the time. Downsizing will catch more fish but if they are biting actively then it may not matter. If you hook a white bass and a striper comes and eats it you may want to have a little heavier line.

I use 20 pound braid with a 17 to 20 pound floracarbon leader ( i use vanish ) at tawakoni you never know if you are getting a hybrid/striper or sand bass. I don't lose to many lures

15 to 20s mono is plenty for twok. Braid will rescue more slabs cuz braid don't stretch.
