Whats your favorite rig (line test, hook style and size, weight choice) for catching stripers on shiners?

I have never used shiners, but if I did I would use the same rig I use for Shad. 65 LB braid mainline, 2oz egg sinker, swivel, 3 of 20 LB mono or flouro leader and your hook of choice. I use Gamakatsu #2 Octopus hook, not the circle one.

12 lb test main line to a number 7 barrel swivel with a 1/2 oz barrel sinker. 20 lb test fluorocarbon leader to a number 4 Gamakatsu Octopus hook.

Shiners will catch a few but if shad are available they will pass on them. Better to buy some worms and catch small perch and use them.

Below Texoma, the 2 guides I spoke with were using shiners. They each had 4 man limits. Plus a couple catfish. They used the simplest setup. Split shot weight about 18 up and a single mid sized gold hook. I know shad are better, but these guys caught fish & thats how they were rigged up.

Because of the low shad population at texoma this year the stripers are biting shiners and artificials better than usual from what I've heard

Shiners work well in the winter months but will work yr round. Bream works well as well. I've never had luck with goldfish and black salties.

Thanks for all the input, much appreciated. Never fished with shiners. Always shad but i knew the shad count was down.

Very similiar to others...I use 80 pound braid mainline (way overkill but takes up room on reel to make my line counter accurate at the moderate to shallow depths I fish), 1 ounce egg sinker, bead, medium size barrel swivel, 20-30 pound mono leader, 2/0 octopus j hook. A 1/0 is too small and easy to bend just getting it out of the fishs mouth, 2/0 gets away from that problem yet still small enough to surgically place through back or nostril.

Plus one. I normally use shad but used shiner the last trip because shad are hard to catch. If fishing Texoma, use circle hooks because you will catch many overs...
