Would these pool noodles work for making a few jugs or would they be too small? they are the small 2.5" diameter ones.

ill have pretty large weights on them, after catfish in general lol. Using jugs to locate spots to try on rod and reel. If I get a half decent sized cat would these be alright? Would rather be safe than sorry.

The larger diameter noodles should work pretty well. I just use Clorox bottles.

Yeah, man, those small noodles, blues will take those under and use them for pillows at night! I agree with Pappy, get you some Clorox bottles and call it a day. I buy my Clorox bottles from US Plastic.

What I like about the pool noodles is they don't scream "JUG LINE," from halfway across the lake.
To make them a little more buoyant, make them a little longer and cap one end of your pvc to trap air or pick up larger noodles.
Those bottles work, but are a pain to store, taking up a lot of room.

You also need to use WHITE as the orange is for commercial use only.
I had a couple of orange ones that I wrapped with that white duct tape.

Just one more cast!

I still use bleach and detergent bottles. I only place 5 jugs out when I jug fish. Now I catch more fish than I use myself on my fishing rod so no need for jugs mostly. I put out my give jugs when I target sandbags and crappie with my pole.

I actually prefer the smaller noodles. They are sufficient for my style. I like to get way up the creeks and fish for eaters. I have the flagging jugs with 1/2" PVC. My jugs have 4-6' of 25# mono with a size 4 or 5 circle hook and a 1 or 2 ounce lead sinker. I generally fish jugs in 3-6' of water, and the jugs are rarely out of view. I have jugs made of the larger noodle, and they work just as well. But, all of my fishing is out of a kayak, so space, weight and ease of handling are at a premium. Try 'em all out. They're cheap enough. Find what you like. I believe 12" of the small noodle is good for what I do. Good luck!

I love jugging! I use the biggest size swim noodle I can find at Walmart or academy and cut them about 10-12 inches long. Not only does it allow you find a big fish WHEN you eventually hook into it, but it floats a little taller so you can see it a little further off than a smaller noodle which is an issue when the jug is not where you left it! Run a pvc through them for backbone. Wrap the noodle in white duck tape for strength, be legal, and have a place to write name, address, and date set out on one end. Drill a hole through it about three inches from one end and run some cheap black tarred catfishing line through the noodle and pvc. You want the black tarred kind because the other colors are not tarred and will unravel easily. Tie on directly to a trotline clip once line is through the noodle/PVC, pull tight and just wrap several feet of string on the jug....way more than you ever plan to use. Add 1 ounce egg sinker to end with a hook of choice and you are golden! I've used barrel swivels but just not worth the effort and does not seem necessary. You can set the depth with trotline clip plus place secure hook into the noodle/duct tape for travel which you cannot do with a plastic bottle. They store super neat and you can put them in a milk crate style basket or 5-gallon bucket. I've used two hooks per jug but never caught more fish with the double hooks and always led to more chance of tangles. Good luck and enjoy!

Just watch them when u set them out. It's fun when a big one pulls it under. That's part of the magic. Don't fish more than u need to. I fish 10 with 3 hooks on each so that's plenty in my opinion and that's more than standard trotlines hold anyway. Put them close to where you sandbass or striper fish and they will be in sight.
