I use both right and left handed baitcasters.
I never got used to a right handed spinning reel.

I would say this. Use your dominant hand to throw the bait and your other hand to crank
The reason is simple. When you use a spinning reel your hand needs to stay on the reel until the bait is in the water.

You can't switch while the bait is in the air. You use your index finger on the line and the spool. There are times, almost every cast where you want to stop the line leaving the spool so you put your finger down. To me anyway, its just much easier to not change hands and in my case reeling with the right hand on a spinning reel does not feel comfortable.

Hi Tbass,
I know this thread shows me as a greenhorn, but I have been fishing for many years. I use Shimano Sahara Spin Reels, which the handle can be put on the left or right, depending on your preference. I prefer left, due to the fact that I grew up that way. I also L/H Bait Casters. With that being said, I am right handed.

Same for me for many years - I like the rod in my right hand.

In memory of my childhood friend Dan Sterling, who taught me at an early age how to catch bream with a hand-line, and who unknowingly hooked me on fishing for life.

Thats weird, I've never heard of anyone casting with their non dominant hand, I'd guess you are a bit ambidextrous. Me trying to cast with my left hand or reeling a spinning reel right handed would look like a cluster.

It is funny because back in the day I watched a video of the master flipper Denny Brauer when he explained the advantages of flipping with your left hand. I put in the effort and time to learn to flip with my left hand and now could not even think what it would be like to flip with my right hand but just never felt comfortable reeling with my left hand on a spinning reel. Oh well thanks for the replies and I think I am just going to be a weird one and buy a spinning reel that I can flip the handle over to the right hand side and fish the same as I do with the bait casters.

I am left handed and use my left hand for pitching and casting and my right for cranking the reel either on spinning or baitcast. Having my right hand free and ready to turn the handle helps keep the buzz bait up and also start other baits much quicker than switching hands. I too have a hard time understanding how some can use right for baitcaster and left for spinning but to each his/ her own. Sometimes I think the baitcasters are mis named. Seems a right crank should be for a lefty and a left crank should be for a righty..

I'm left handed and when I use a spinning rod/reel setup I swap it to right handed.

They are. They said so during a seminar in Ft Worth just before one of the Megabucks in 1997.

I use right handed bait casting reels but have often thought about trying left handed ones. popcorn2

Several reasons to have a left crank for a right handed person.

Setting the hook with your dominant hand
Working the bait with your dominant hand
Casting and controlling line with your dominate hand.
Controlling fish on line with dominant hand

Another thing is that the crank is further away from the rod so it is more difficult to switch as opposed to a bait caster.
