Didnt want to hijack the other one as he is still getting responses. Im running a 175 aluminum bass tracker, Im convinced Im gonna get spot lock set up. I dont think I need 36 volts, am I correct? I can hold a decent spot with my foot on the tm pedal as it is running, 45lb, Minn Kota edge 12v, 5 speed. Average speed holding is sliding between 2-3, I dont fish open water when its rough either.
What do yall say?

I had a 55lb power drive V2 with ipilot on an Alumacraft 1860 cc and it did pretty well for the most part (surprised how well it did when the water got rough). I don't think you need a 36 volt setup. on my current 18' fiberglass I run a 80lb ultrex and it does well.

80 # with a 45" shaft is plenty for your boat. That's what I have on my 18'-6 Skeeter and it's perfect. The other guy had a 21' boat and I assumed he already had 36V so I recommended a 36 x 112 x 52 " shaft. Could he get by with less ? Yes probably, but not knowing what type of fishing he did or the lakes he fished I didn't want to cut him short. If you spend a lot of time on Rayburn or TB you know what rough water is really like and a 36v x 112 can be real handy. Nothing worse than spending that much money and the thing wouldn't perform like it should. Most people buy the Ultrex for the spot lock and that is a great selling point but it's also a terrific trolling motor, easy to operate and has lift assist.

What do y’all say? got a 80# on my 17' tracker but I went with a 60" shaft cause I fish deep open water. 80# is perfect for it

24 vole set up is enough for now and later. The shaft length is critical, cuz you prolly will get a larger boat in the future and the TM placed there. A word to the wise, batteries are a major part as well. Chose wisely.

I have a very similar boat and think that 80 pounds of thrust is overkill for our size boat. I have the exact TM and can hold ok as well but I don't think I would ever need 80 pounds of thrust. Our boats are not very smooth so if we needed the 80 then we would probably be holding on for dear life. I am leaning towards the XI5 55 pound which gives me a bit more power as well as the spot lock.

There is no such thing as overkill on a trolling motor!

There is good info here. 24 volt system should be fine. But if you plan on fishing out deep a lot in your tin rig, a long shaft might be beneficial. I ran a 60 inch 24 volt Maxxum on my old trolling motor and I needed every inch of it. Had plenty of thrust though.

Im running a a Terrova 55 on a 170 Montauk and it does good. There are times I wished I had a 24 volt when chasing jug lines or 20+ mph winds but I only have room for one battery. Im also running the highest amp hour group 31 battery I can find and have yet to run it down. Overall very pleased.

I have a 12 Volt 55 lb Terrova iPilot 2nd Generation on my 1660 aluminum. I have a DuraCraft which is a wide heavy boat that catches a lot of wind. I was shocked at how well this motor works. The spot-lock is a very efficient system. Once you are "on-spot" the motor uses very little juice to keep you there. I just have one dedicated size 31 battery for my TM and I can stay on a spot all day long if I want to. I usually don't fish in much wind but one day I was out in a 15-20 mph wind and the spot-lock kept me right on the spot. If fact, it works better if it has some wind to "push against". Most of my fishing is hovering near bluegill or crappie holes.
Without question this is the best fishing invention since side scan. I have not used my anchor 1 time since I got it. What a relief to be able to operate the TM from anywhere in the boat and instantly spot-lock it if I want to. It's a HUGE game changer. Everybody knows what a pain it is to anchor in deep water. Those days are gone ! It's as easy as pushing a button on your remote. And you will stay more tightly positioned than any anchor.
Bottom line. I have felt no need for "more power".

a smaller boat may not need 80# but am one who uses a TM to move from place to place like just moving down a bank 100 yards and it is good to have the more speed to do that instead of wasting time
